Edelbrock inlet manifold

Could anyone tell me what benefits I could gain by fitting an Edelbrock Performer RPM Dual Plane inlet manifold and 800cfm carb to an otherwise standard 302? Would it be over carburetted? Would I need a different cam? Head work?
All answers gratefully received!!

Hi Murray. The Performer RPM has a 1500/ 6500 rev range.Should be ideal for your application. The 800 cfm carb is to large,try a 600 cfm carb, it will be much more user friendly and still be suitable if you choose to upgrade your cam and cyl heads at a later date. Regards Jack.

Thanks Jack, I have a Holley at the moment, no idea what size though, thought that might do to start. The two (carb and manifold) come together so maybe I could sell off the carb. Hmmm, time to think. Thanks again.

Depends on what kind of Holley.
The old 780 cfm single pump/vacuum secondary carb is fine on a 302 with manual transmission and decent gears.
The 800 double pumper mechnical secondary is too big
for a mild 302. The model # is usually stamped on the air horn or base. Got a photo?

I have a 750 Double pumper on my 302 with this manifold. I am very happy with it and it work VERY well for me. I think the key to a larger carb is getting the advance curve right. I like mine all in by about 2500 revs. Total 34 degrees.

I'm with Jack -- 600cfm double pump with centre pivot bowls and a 1" 4 hole spacer is heaps for a dual plane 302--unless its a really wild 302 ?

Don't forget that a duel plane manifold only "shows" one half of the carb to each cylinder as it draws in the intake charge. This makes your 600 a 300. This is why a 750 works well on a 302. On the other hand the same 750 on a single plane might just be a little too much at the bottom end, bellow 2500 revs, right as you open the throttle fully.

Wow, lots of information, thanks guys. Seems like this is a good manifold to play with. The engine at the moment is absolutely standard, once everything is up and running then I can do the "extras". I shall have to get the Holley off and check it out for numbers.
