Ford DOHC - cooling mod?

Just a heads up for you late model junkies- according to an article on the Club Cobra site these motors can or do have a problem with localised overheating on the two rear cyls of the drivers side ( I will assume this is USA drivers side). There is apparently a kit available that works in conjunction with the heater hoses to help, but the guy in question building a Cobra made his own with braided hose since he was not using the heater plumbing. Looks to me like the kit or mod causes more coolant to flow in the critical area for better cooling. With a few of you getting to the point of firing up your ' Mod ' motors now this might be something to watch for. I know 'Dimi' has a few miles on his, but I havent seen any problems mentioned.

Hi Jac Mac

I have now logged in excess of 10,000 Km's on my 40 since it was first registered last May and a lot of it was during the hottest days in summer with temps over 40c.

The only mod I had to make was to install a lower opening thermostat and to modify the thermostat by drilling a few 2.5 mm holes in the flange to allow some water circulation with the thermostat closed to stop the cycling effect that was happening due to the long coolant run to the radiator.

By allowing the coolant to have a minimal flow at all times it stops the shock of having the sudden hit of hot coolant to the radiator and then the thermostat closing from the hit of cold water from the radiator till it all settles
down.

The warmup time is greatly reduced and is much gentler and even without the large hot / cold cycles.

Other than that it has been running like a dream with no other problems and very tractable in city traffic and great on the open road.

Still get blown away by the accelleration when overtaking or just putting it down for the hell of it just because I can.

Dimi.

Presumably you're speaking of a fellow named Patrick. He's a friend of mine local to me and has come up with a rather nice solution I think.. Certainly worth a look;

That is a nice solution Randy. I have tapped the manifold before on a SC'd SOHC for this. We were able to add quite a bit more timing without detonation afterwards
