G50 gear positions

Hi,

Is anyone able to explain in simple terms the gear positions for the following :-

1988 Porsche G50 short nose box, G50001 J04078, the shaft appears to move in and out to three positions. I believe it should then rotate, to select other gears and reverse.

Regards

Nick

The center of the three positions when moving in/out is the neutral gate from which you can rotate left or right to select the other shifter rails.

Nick, sorry cant help with that, maybe someone with more current G50 experience could chip in. I cannot remember whether its,1st/ Rev on the same rail or 5th/Rev.:) My Porsche experience is somewhat limited- I flipped the Ring Gear on my 901 ( early 911 ) box for a 906 application only to have a gentleman of several years P***** experience arrive & tell me that it was not possible--could not be done---- he left considerably more experienced than he arrived! Seemed to have picked up some sort of nervous tic in the process, couldnt stop his head from shaking:)

A quick look at the shift pattern on the gear lever knob should sort you out!

Thanks for that, I know the feeling I was once introduced to the secretary of a car club who knew everything about vintage cars, as "Mr Brough who has a Brough car" . He told me Brough only made motorbikes, and it must be a fake, I didn't have the heart to argue.

Good idea about the gear knob unfortunately I don't have it.

Nick,
If the trans is out of the car, rotate the imput shaft and count the number of turns it takes for the axel to make one revolution. The more revolutions the imput shaft makes is the lower the gear. If the trans is installed, mark the pressure plate and do the same with the clutch disengaged. Not an easy task, but you will know right away. An alternative with the trans in the car, is to move the pressure plate the same number of clicks(teeth) for each gear, measure the arc the axel goes through. Smaller arc=lower gear. Of course reverse is the turn in the opposite direction.
I believe that is correct.

As far as I am aware on the G50 it is a four rail box. Reverse is to the left of 1st and 5th is to the right of 3rd.

Once you find reverse, which is easy enough to determine, the rest falls into place.
