G50 Update Kit - Why?

PORSCHE TRANSMISSION UPDATE KIT FOR RELEASE BEARING FORK SHAFT

Some of you may be wondering, "Update Kit? What is that for?" Well, the original design (87-89 G50s) of the throwout bearing fork shaft left an opeing for bad things to happen if the bearings were to seize up. The way it was designed, if the bearing seized up, the races could begin to turn within the casting rings in the bell housing, which, over time, could wear these rings out. Since they are a part of the casting, it could render this major portion of the transaxle case useless or, at best, very difficult to refurbish. What this kit does is move the pivot bearings from between the shaft and the mount rings to between the shaft and the fork arm. It does require the cast rings to be machined out slightly, but most any dealership or quality Porsche shop can do this.

One note of caution, make sure that the machining of the far ring is deep enough! When my transaxle was done, the far side ring (opposite side from the shaft insertion side) wasn't deep enough and the retainer Z tab was not able to seat flush with the end of the pivot shaft.
