Let’s not get into politics or political blames please.
This is actually a very important subject that affects us all - almost to the degree that Covid has and continues…

From the USA Perspective::
Apparently we DO produce more oil that we use, but I was surprised to find out that it is the wrong kind of oil for many of our refineries here…

$5.29 regular average price around here. Costco today is 4.79 a gallon. WA state so we have some healthy tax built in the price.

ok, of that $2 per liter 22.2c of that is currently a fuel tax excise in Australia (which would be 83.9c per gallon)
this excise will go back up to 44.4c per liter again shortly - $1.68 per gallon in tax.
we also pay 10% GST on the petrol as well.
so $2 per liter x 0.9 - 22.2 (or 44.4) means that the price from the outlet is actually $1.58 per liter currently or $5.96 per Gallon before taxes.

How does that compare elsewhere when you take out your local taxes and excises ?

It’s interesting…. Taxes are levied on both Federal and State levels. I’m not aware of any local taxes levied on fuels.
The charts and info below are from 2016 - so may not be current info..

My question is "Why do people put up with such exorbitant taxes? You do vote the politicians in/out of office.

We were instructed to keep politics out of this discussion but there is no way you can separate the two.

But the thread can be locked if you feel you can’t mind your tongue or typing fingers. Your choice Neil.
Yes, it can... but discussing gas prices without mentioning politics is like discussing the concept of an afterlife without mentioning religion.

Here in NZ taxes are even more on fuel and our GST (Grab Snatch Take) is 15%

The fuel excise portion includes:
Did you know?
It's now government policy for all petrol tax to be directed back into New Zealand's road and transport system. The AA lobbied hard on behalf of motorists to achieve this.
Previously, over a third of the tax collected on petrol was diverted by the government to other areas of spending.
  • 70.024 cents - National Land Transport Fund
  • 6 cents - ACC Motor Vehicle Account
  • 0.66 cents - Local Authorities Fuel Tax
  • 0.6 cents - Petroleum or Engine Fuels Monitoring Levy
In addition, GST is collected on the overall price of fuel including excise. The GST on excise amounts to 14.6 cents per litre "tax on taxes".
There are no excise taxes on diesel other than 0.33 cents Local Authorities Fuel Tax, and GST. Instead, diesel vehicles pay Road User Charges.
All fuels also pay an Emissions Trading Scheme levy (approximately 20 cents per litre).
In Auckland, an additional 10 cent per litre Regional Fuel Tax is levied on all petrol and diesel sold in the Auckland region (since July 2018).

So if we do the maths like Ryan Love above and move all the NZ taxes we get.

$3:11 - 15% - 70.024 - 6 - 0.66 - 0.6 - 20 - 10 (I am in Auckland) = approx $1:57 NZD a litre so that would be $1.01 USD a litre which is not bad so just the taxes are the killer here and this is after the govt has removed 25c a litre recently for 3 months due to public pressure.

geepers, now i have confused myself.
:p

Converting to USD
means that the price from the outlet is actually $1.12 USD per liter currently or $4.24 USD per Gallon before taxes.

based on $1AU = $0.71 USD

So, that is not too different to the $1.01 USD per Liter that @nzeder has mentioned in post #38.
