GT40-kitcar streetlegal in EU?

Hi

If i buy new kit-car GT40, is there any manufacturer who sell kits with all registration documents for normal street-use in EU -countries?
I know some countries, like Sweden, they have special kit-car registration-system.
We live here with tight rules , in Finland, and car must have good documents for registration; but it`s enough for me if some other EU-country has accepted vehicle for street-use, w/o special permissions etc.
Can`t use USA -documents.

and Italy is a mess..but seems u dont have to show the car (but only the documents), when u convert the road plate into an italian one.

...thinking to plate "Milano" an F-104S then..

No way otherwise to register here a car handmade by yourself.

And one problem is -awfull tax charges- here. If car is new or just built up, they are collecting same tax like from brand new GT, in €uros around 30-40G`s! (maybe more). Asked fact, nothing new for me.
And `couse there is no kitcar reg., they compare it to brand new vehicle; U must have airbags, pollution levels -07 etc etc.
After little of search, i think best solution is buy used one, and "best one`s" are from seventies; taxcharges-in-mind. Or identification from 60-80 at least...

Any ideas?

A solution is buy a used GT40.
Or if want a new kit registrade it in GB or in Germany.

They have the same stupid problem i Norway i believe. They even require crash test.. One solution is to move to sweden

We have the same problem in Denmark.

But there is a loophole. The trick is to ask as few questions as possible and get a car with British or German papers.

I know a few people here that have gotten kit cars registered because they had British or German registration papers. But its not possible to have the car registered if it has not been approved in another EU country.

Another way of doing it is if the car has papers from a donor car stating that the car has a 1st date of registration older than 1977. Then the rules from 1977 apply. That means no CATs and no crash tests. That will work with american cars too. I know someone here in Denmark that specializes in importing Cobras from the USA.

So if theres a will there is a way.

Here in Sweden we have i thing that is called amatör byggt fordon (amateur buildt veichle) wich makes i possible to build a gt40. why not build it in sweden registrate it and then export it.

Ok idea, but as i wrote, if i registrate it -first time ever-, let`s say 2007, in any country, custom will charge same tax as 2007 Ford GT. Sad but true.

So, it must be very old, still i think tax will be giant-size.
Example, i paid 02/07 for -93 Escort Cossie (from inside EU) over 4 grand tax + 22% VAT. "Have a nice day" they said...

But let see what`ll happen.

I understand that EU rule is that if you own a car in one EU country and you move to an other EU country no local legalslation can stand ine the way of "your" car being registered in the country where you now live. But as always local registration authorities are not very happy/knowledgeble on EU regulation to comply. For you to fight, talk to your EU MP.
Essential: buy and register the car in the EU country where it has been homologated. To get a tempory adress ask a local hotel/guest house.
Then present the car with papers in your name for re-registration where you wish (within EU).

I have read that you have bought a Gt40 of Sportscar from Sweden, right? Will you try to get it road legal in Finland, do you believe it’s possible with new rules for the small production series car type approval?

Hi Patric,

Yes, i bought one (and sold two more).
I think i have as much chances to get plates here as snowman have chances not melting in vulcano. Let see; maybe it`ll be a "semi" trailer queen and i must tow it to race tracks. I hate that, but don`t wanna play Don Quijote.
But my love to GT 40`s is bigger. Made decision in early seventees; "some day". Without plates if necessary.
Even all my rally/racecars are (were) registered. Cars are made for -driving-, i think.

Ok, then I understand how hard it will be to get it approved. that is very sad, L it should be a dream to get at gt40 road legal. I will contact the local car approval later in the spring and ask what the rules really mean!
Are you satisfying with the quality of the parts from Sportscar? Did you buy complete car or only the basic model?

There is a loophole in the UK that you might be able to exploit.
During the 60s and 70s a number of Ford Mustangs were imported into the UK and received registration papers that described them as 'Two axle rigid body sports'. They have 60s/70s related registration plates that it are very easy to date by their year-code.
If you can acquire one of these registrations, and they are available if pricey, your 'Two axle rigid body sports' can be a GT40 replica, street legal in UK and requiring only a roadworthiness test before it can be driven on the road.
The rest would be up to you..........

That's exactly how my '67 Shelby GT350 was titled when I bought it in 1983. I didn't like the look of it at all and had it changed to "Shelby GT350" in the Log Book with no objections from DVLA (or whatever it was called back then)..

Once again; Thank You guys for hints and advices! I`ll check them if they are usefull.

Getting 40 to plates in europe is always a problem, but as i wrote earlier, in here it`s mission impossible `couse of greedy goverment (HUGE taxes) and oldfashion thinking and interpretations in MOT.

It`s very hard to understand if you don`t live here.
Example: i have done finlands first and only (and last) Escort mk3/4 RWD -conversion, MOT and road legal. Fighted 5-6 years to get permission to do it legally.
Problem really wasn`t the Cosworth engine but chanced-over parts (and FWD to RWD) : we have index sheets where MOT/custom tell how much prosentage every part is in car (like front fender 2%) ; if you chance over 50% -> they`ll say you make a new car; 5 -figure tax, catalytic converters, airbags etc etc. In words, can`t do it.
