Hi there,

Does anyone know if it is possible to fit an automatic gearbox with a suitable engine to any of the available GT40 kits? I know that performance would not be the same, but it is such a good looking car that I could live with it (if it is possible).... Does such a car exist?

There was a Renault UN1 Automatic made - never seen one fitted to a GT40 though

We built an Automatic car for a customer but its been about15 years ago or so.

The Automatic version of the Renault box is a little longer at the rear than the manual version so its a tight squeeze.

Hi Edd,
As long as you find a box short enough to fit in the frame you'd be just fine. Manual Renault or Audi boxes are common in GT40's, so I imagine the auto equivalents should fit.

Hi...... I need an automatic as I need to use hand controls (Paraplegic following a fall:sad which work better with an auto box. I had a manual Mitsubishi 3000GT to which I had a system fitted to change gear without a foot-pedal clutch, but it was a dog-rough gear-change and a nightmare to use when negotiating junctions......

Hi Edd,

I see. Have you tried getting in a '40 yet?
It may not be too bad as the "correct" way to get in is to stand on the seat then just slide in (that's the way I get my lardy ar5e in). The cutout in the roof makes it more accessible for all abilities. You may not be too far from Tornado, I'm sure Andy would be more than willing to let you have a look over his cars. Thanks for your reply Simon. I am only 4 miles from Tornado and did visit them prior to my accident, and am sure getting in and out won't be an issue- I'm really after a second hand car ; one to work on (or rather have the work done on by someone else)....I am also looking at having no foot pedals at all, as this would make some useful space to shoehorn me into (6'01"), but will need to research MOT regs....

Edd, the problem with having only hand controls is that would not be able to get any experienced other driver to test or set the car up for you with confidence.There are a few paraplegic drivers doing MSA events down here in the south, some sprinting and racing, but they have both foot controls as well as hand controls. In fact two of the guys are very quick indeed and regularly beat most of the field. If it helps I can give you contacts to talk to. Frank
