New to site few questions about CAV GT

Hi Guys

Well I was pretty dead set on getting a pantera until I came across this car.

http://www.pim.net/cav427a.htm

I think I found a new love :)

So first thing I am wondering it about registering one of these. Is it registered as a new car or as a classic gt40?

I have a real hard time justifying 5-6000 for insurance for a car I may drive 1000 miles a year. HAHA

Also how is the performance of the car. It looks so well put together but is it really setup to perform? I've had many race cars so I am picky at times.

Most important is how stable are these over 100mph? They cool really slick but not sure just how the aerodynamic they are at those speeds.

Thanks and any opinions you got I would apreciate.

Welcome to the forum. You need to provide a little more information for any help on your question. Where do you intend on registering the car. There are forum members all over the world and registration is unique in every country and in every state or province etc.

I pretty much have the same car minus 140 HP,and I can tell you that mine will really scoot. It is stable at most any speed after I got my allignment correct and nothing attracts attention like this car (good and bad). Insurance for mine was in line with my daily driver,S430. Mine is registered as a 66 gt40. chuck

This maybe slightly off the topic, but why do so many pics of CAVs have them without side mirrors? I love the CAV cars. Bob Childress's is one of my favorites in particular. But all the time I see no side mirrors. Can anyone tell me why?

Re: Side mirrors

I'm not sure which one it is, but one of the GT40 replica manufacturers has outside rear view mirrors that hang off the door frame about 1/3 to 1/2 of the way down from the roof line. I think those would be more useful, as they stand out from the side of the car quite a bit, plus they look very "space age"! Does anyone know which manufacturer specs this type of mirror, and if they are available separately?

That would be the DRB - GT40 Australia car. There is a section for them on this forum and photos of many of their beautiful cars.

I noticed the comments about mirrors on our cars. Mirrors that look cool don’t give much of a view to the rear, and those that do seem a little too prominent to me. Like “they” say, hard to have your cake and eat it too.

When I first got my car, several forum members recommended 1984 Mazda RX7 outside power mirrors which I used and mounted far forward on the doors. They have long necks and the view is not bad. If I had it all to do over again I would also consider mirrors that mount to the lower front corners of the lexan side windows.

And, back on the topic of this thread, I think that based on the picture of the VIN tag that the car in the hyperlink ad is actually #28, not #43, but it is sure a clean powerful machine.

I think this car is the one that was "spammed" here and on Club Cobra in the last week or so. It appears to be an early CAV build with an Audi 016 transaxle.

Thanks for the replies

That would be good as long as I can register it as a 64 or so and can insure it thru Hagerty. Definetly got to make sure before I even think of throwing down the cash.

Not technicaly looking for another race car. But I am sure it would make it's way to limerock at some point. :D

I believe that car has been for sale at PI Motorsports in Orange, CA at least since 2004. When I started looking into replicas, I saw this very page with this blue car and the $100k price. Beautiful to be sure, but apparently over-built and/or over-priced for anyone to take it seriously these last few years. Also, if you recall last spring almost immediately after the RF fallout, there was a red CAV that was spec'd pretty much the same - it was on ebay for $85 then reduced to 75, but I believe never sold. Here's the thread from that one last April

Nathan, other than the engine and trans this car looks identical to my CAV mono #8. You'll want to be sure that the center console is included as well since it appears to be missing in the pictures.

I can attest to the good handling of these CAVs at speed. Very well set up for street and track with good adjustability in the stock suspension. And, yes, over 100mph they are rock solid. I've had mine to 140+ and she was still accelerating hard - aerodynamics are good with no floating front end or wobbling in the rear. You won't be disappointed.

The price is high. I bought my 2002 CAV for about $50,000 with 3,000 miles on the Odometer. Granted, the engine is a less tuned 302 and the transaxle is the Audi unit (still very fast however). You should be able to close a deal on this one for $75,000 or less. I'd offer $72,500 for openers and then be very slow to come up from there, and in small increments.

This car will run circles around a pantera and look a whole bunch better in so doing. Ping me with a prive message if you want more information.

Thanks Cliff

Yeah I was looking around and thought it seemed to be at least 10k over what it's worth.

I'm gonna wait a litle bit I think since I will be so busy the rest of the year, but man these really are beautiful cars. I might just get one built. Really want a orange and black car :D

Besides I would rather have something with fuel injection and ITB. That's what my 914-6 has and it's such a sweet setup.

Nathan,

Yup, I don't think you can beat the looks. I have a 911 cab and a ferrari but it's the gt40 that gets all the admiring stares. A wonderful shape and elegant and simple chassis/engine.

The small block fords can use EFI. Many guys on this forum use EFI on their gt40, likely for the same reasons you like it.

I'll bet that if you go for a drive in a decent gt40 (like a CAV) you won't be waiting until the end of the year to get one. It's like a 911 or a 914-6 pumped up on major steroids!

Hi guys

Well I have been poking around a bit and reading trying to learn more. I am super impressed with the CAV GT quality. The frame looks amazing. Interior looks great. I spoke with Roy at VIPclassics and he was very friendly and talked alot about racing GT40s. He said it will be registered as a 64 ford and having it insured thru Hagerty shouldn't be a problem. I just need to call them to double check of course. I hate paying insurnce HAHA

So I am planing to get one built obviously. I kinda know what I want but I will think about it for awhile. I don't plan on putting down any money til the begining of Dec anyways.

Basicaly I want a super car. 200+ mph bat out of hell. Now what color? I was thinking porsche GT3 orange but I'm not sure it will look good in that color.

Nathan, great to hear you might be jumping in and joining the CAV/gt40 fraternity. Great group of guys with a real practical and collegial hands-on approach.

The CAV mono is superb. I really like the all stainless steel monocoque. The originals were mild steel but the CAV chassis shape/design is nearly exact other than the ss v. mild steel. Having had to do chassis/frame restorations before (no fun), the ss is a big plus. All the welds are very well done and polished.

The CAV, unlike many other mfg's, is obviously a production/factory made automobile with everything nicely engineered and constructed. The chassis is designed to take some monster hp - you should be fine to put in up to 500hp with a good transaxle like the ZF.

Another nice thing about the CAV is that it's one of the few mfg's out there that produces a gt40 that can accommodate a tall guy. I'm six two and have no problem sitting in my CAV. Can't say the same for many of the other gt40 replicas out there.

Welcome to the club.

Hey just wondering what you think I might be looking at as far as price for a roush 402 IR with a 6 speed ZF transmission installed? I'm gonna meet the engine builder in a few weeks but curiousity is killing me.

http://www.roushperf.com/engines.shtml

But yeah something like the roush is what I want. 50-100 more hp would be even cooler though.

Thanks again guys!!!

Nathan, the Roush 402 is probably somewhere around $10-12,000. 500+ hp in a car this light is honestly way more hp than the car needs. 500 hp will push you to 200+ mph and get you to 60 in about 4 seconds with a quarter mile at about 11 seconds. Plenty, plenty fast unless the car is strictly a track car. That's scary fast for the road.

The ZF six speed I have no idea. A ZF five speed (original spec to the Pantera) goes for around $7,500.

To get started you might want to just try a stroked 302 (347?) with a beefed up audi transaxle. Combined cost would be around $8,000-$9,000. Then you can decide if you need more power. I bet that you'll be plenty happy with the power. Because it's so much less expensive than the Roush with 6spd ZF you won't have to wait until xmas to order it!
