Oil pump drive

On the SBF when going without a distributor what is being used to drive the oil pump? I have found that you can use a Cam Position Shaft from an Explorer but was hoping that I could use something that did not include my buying a sensor.

Some guys have used an old distributor that is cut off and capped. Seems like I recall a thread on this. Try some searches on distributorless igntion terms to find the thread where this was talked about.

Seems that the Explorer part was mentioned, so maybe you've already found the thread I am thinking about.

I presume that you are running a wasted spark setup? otherwise the phase and sync available from the aftermarket (Explorer) sensor would be useful.

We used an old distributor cut down but as we are now dry-sump - it only provides phase signal.

Anyone got an old distibutor (bits missing etc) they don't need anymore???

No, I did not find that information here, I found it on the net when researching this question.

I should explain what is going on. I have been putting the parts togeather for my motor and purchased the injection and Tech3r computer from Wayne. long decision process but it boiled down to his having had a 40 and being very easy to work with, along wth total price.

Anyway I had not given much thought to how I was going to run the system other than using the Crank Trigger. After seeing the replys to my question and reading more in the Electromotive manual I am leaning towards going full sequential on my injection. The Tec3r can handle both phased or sequential with the latter requireing a Cam Position Sensor and the phased using only the Crank Trigger. My question now is what is the opinion between the two setups, and does anyone know if the Explorer Cam Sensor and pump drive unit would be compatable with the Tec3r.

MSD sells a plug/Sync distributor for the 302 or 351. Part 8522 for the 302 and 8506 for the 351W. They sell for about $140.00 US.

May or may not be any help, but I gutted the stock dist. on the Cleveland leaving only the shaft and top bearing, cut down the housing, and made an O ringed cap for what remained. All it does is drive the oil pump...plus the cap is personalized with the wifes name as well as mine. That always helps!!
I'm running wasted spark on a Haltech with triggering from 4 magnets set into the flywheel. They serve as both trigger and sync signals to a Hall switch. Thus, I needed no signals from the dist. at all.

Sorry so dirty! Body work is dirty, dusty business......

Thanks for the information on the MSD Plug/Sync. After reviewing the product and confirming with Electromotive that the ECU was compatable with the Hall Effect signal I ordered that unit.

I was able to find it for US118.00, once again tanks to all of you for your input.

Make sure your cam is compatible with the iron drive gear on this piece. I know some of the roller cams need a hardened steel gear and won't work with the iron gear.

Good to hear from you and see you are making progress. How 'bout some recent pics in the Builder's Forum. The motor looked really nice, but it sounds like you've added a few bits since then.
