RCR40 or SLC?

I'm considering a custom car and after a lot of research i have narrowed it down to RCR. They seem to have the best build quality and options available.

I'm trying to decide between the RCR40 or the SLC.

The car will be for street use so one concern i have is ground clearance. The 40 seems quite a bit higher than the SLC. I'm leaning toward the SLC because it's so unique but if it's really only fit for track use that would eliminate it.

Another issue is air conditioning which is a must in the Texas inferno i live in.

All opinions welcome and thanks for any help. I just joined the forum.

Welcome to the forum Mark! The SL-C is available with an optional hydraulic lift system to raise the car over obstacles. The typical standard ride height is between 4 and 4.5 inches. With the "street" spring rates, the ride is compliant. Much stiffer with the track springs. The dampers are also adjustable and the mid range settings
should be acceptable for street driving. Air conditioning also available. Give Fran Hall a jingle for details. My SL-C is like jewlery!

"plenty" of street driven SLCs around, such as Cam's - I don't think the ride height of it is too incredibly low, you just have to be alert when driving and you'll be fine.

it's also about using common sense - i can't begin to count the number of people I've seen drop their z06s, drive over speed bumps, dent/scrape their longtubes, then get upset that they can no longer go over speed bumps - common sense will prevail.

As mentioned by others, the ground clearance is adjustable. But the standard setting are more than adequate for normal roads, particularly if you are shorter, and don't need the dropped floors. The 40 has a better approach angle, but that is something that can be managed in an SLC. My SLC will be a street car, and with the optional hydraulic lift kit, it should be fine. Just be sensible about conditions, as Alex advises, and you will be happy.

Regarding street use, the SLC has a very open feeling in the cockpit, and does not feel cramped at all. By contrast, the 40 is a classic design that was entirely race-focused, and consequently the ergonomics are not optimal for the street.

AC is standard for the SLC street version, and I think it is standard on the 40 Deluxe kit.

Both of the cars are great, but the SLC is arguably a better street car- it's larger, has a more open, airy cockpit, can be modernized in ways that are commonly discouraged by the 40 purists, and has a great deal of drivetrain flexibility. The 40 has the classic look of the 60s; the SLC captures the ethos of the thundering IMSA GTP and LMP cars.

Tell Fran you want a GT40 rear end and SLC cockpit/nose, lol. All kidding aside..if you want historic and more of a ford motor fan the GT40 is great...the new revised SLC with street tail is drool happy good looks too.

Welcome to GT40s Mark...

I guess it all depends on what makes your heart go pitter-patter...

I like them both - but it was the GT40 that won my love/lust back in 1965 and nothing else would do it for me.. I'll build an SL-Lemans someday - but first I'll finish my GT40 and enjoy it for a while...

Also

If you're talking to friends and tell them you're building a car - They'll say "What is it?

If you say GT40 - most of them will know right off the bat what you're talking about..

I think that the SL-C might be a bit hotter in the summer as it has more windshield exposure.. As long as you have AC you'll be okay in either one..

Good luck with your decision and let us know if you have any questions...

Mark, I'm on the north side of Dallas, stop by some time. I'm surprised you havent seen the loud yellow SLC terrorizing i635 lately!

Going with RCR is a smart choice.....if your undecided take a trip and visit RCR you will not be disappointed and it will be worth your time.

I visited Cam and rode in his SLC. Awesome car with amazing performance. People are telling me the SLC has more room than the 40. That being the case these kit cars just aren't going to work for this fat boy with size 12 double E feet. I sat in it and my club feet covered the entire foot well. A shame because i really liked his car and he has put a lot of hard work into it. Looks like i'll have to pony up for a modern Ford GT at some point. Thanks to all for the feedback and to Cam for the invite to check out his SLC

Mark,

I wear 12-D shoes, and work the pedals fine. Perhaps the pedals could be modified to fit your wider feet?

I think there is plenty of room in the footbox.

If you otherwise liked the SLC, don't let a detail like this stop you, as these cars are made to be modified to suit (and fit) the owners.

I'm about 5'11, 175 so i have the pedal box pretty close. there is probably 1 foot behind the box right now. it puts most 6'+ peoples knees binding the steering wheel but could be fixed. I've also got the medium seats.

Part of the trick with the pedal/pedal box is wearing narrow shoes. I found dress shoes work fine for me (others use something called racing shoes) .... trying to wear "normal" shoes like Rebocks or whatever, regardless of foot size, is like eating soup with a fork.

Mark,
glad you liked the SLC ...I know for a fact we have bigger guys than you driving SLC's
And as we build them all here , we can modify anything needed on request...just ask.

I sat in the SLC at SEMA. It was a bit tight, but I wouldve made it work. Just wish I had that kind of money! Im 6'5'', 240 lbs w/ 13E shoes.
