Hello Bryan,

What kind of UN gearbox it is?

Only 3rd gear is affected or even 4th?

When you say 'fairly new', it means it has been recently rebuilt?

Let me know

Cheers

New box to me ,purported to be rebuilt.Problem only in third.Shifts fine by hand at rest, with cables un hooked. And without a load on it.Un sure as to model. Is there a way to distinguish model of box? Bryan

From outside, hard to say what gearbox you have, have a look at the casting year on the housings and also if it is a mechanical speedo sensor or an electronic one. It may help to determine what could it be...but if it has been dismantled, you cannot be sure that what is inside is in accordance with the outside...

Also you can rotate the input shaft by hand and calculate how many degrees it makes the shafts to turn. The ratio can give you accurate hints of what is inside.

Asked for 4th as I already saw a rebuild with a "builder" who forgot to replace the locking ball to the link that handles the fork, so obviously the gears didn't stay engaged. In the UN, 3rd and 4th are held by the same link so if the locking ball was missing the problem would occur on these 2. As it only happens on one, forget this way.

Neverthless as a jumping gear has many sources and one of them is the linkage, check that when you engage manually the gear using the arm on the rear side of the gearbox, you fill it "locked" when in 3rd gear. Too much play can drive to this trouble. Also check that your NSX wires allow the gear to be fully engaged.

If all is ok from this side...the problem is eventually inside : could be the 3/4 hub, hub spline, dog teeth of the 3rd pinion, fork damaged, synchro ring or just the 3 springs that are worn...For sure, one of these..., but unfortunately only a visual inspection will tell you....

Stephane hit it right on the head here I think. My guess is that the dogring on the gear is bad, and probably the operating sleeve. A worn fork will do this too, as it prevents the operating sleeve from engaging the gear evenly.

Good luck with this.

I'm the guy working on Bryans transaxle. Tag on the box indicates a 369

The problem that I see is that the rear input shaft bearing is worn and has a significant amount of "front - rear" play in it.

This means that the shift hub can't move far enough back to fully engage the 3rd gear drive dogs.

4th gear is fine because due to the cut of the gears, the input shaft is "pulled" into the drive dogs (shaft moves rearward) but on third gear, the shaft is still moved reward and this is disengaging the drive dogs.

Front input shaft roller bearing is no problem, the rear bearing is a double roller bearing with no markings or numbers on it. Looks like the early one (as opposed to the later dual tapered bearing setup)

Any assistance locating the rear dual ball bearing for the input shaft is appreciated.
