Selector assembly for the AUDI 5000 Box

Can anyone help me with assembly of the selector mechanism for the 016. I disassembled the selector shaft removing plate, c-clip, retainer with two springs and the shaft. I have third smaller spring which I assume is located ontop of the selector shaft through upper access port. Does anyone know the purpose of this spring and how it should be located?

Are you speaking of the CAV gear selector mechanism?

On my CAV it is a cable system not a rod system. Yours is??

If you speak of original audi gear selector components I can help you as I just disassembed an 016.
