Shift Pattern for G50 transaxle

I'm trying to set up the shifter and covers in the car now and when trying to "shift thru the gears" by hand, found that I'm apparently too dumb /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif to find reverse gear - - I've assumed that it's full "left" and up - - have I got it backwards??

thanks

Dave,

As you are sitting there looking at the tranny, rotate the shifter shaft clock wise until you feel a stop. Now with a tad more force you can rotate it about 5º more. You have just depressed the reverse detent and should now be able to pull straight back into reverse. (It has been so long since I did this, I am now questioning if it is a push or a pull.) Once you find the detent, you have it though. Just experiment from there. I could even have the clockwise/counterclockwise backwards, but one direction you'll hit a hard stop and that is it and the other you'll hit a stop and then be able to go a bit more. You will feel the resistance of the detent spring and if you release pressure it will go back to the first stop position.

Clear as mud?

HTH,
Lynn

Dave,

Reverse is UP to the left, not down. The reverse gate requires a pretty good shove to the left, to engage it. It should pop right in from neutral, without a bunch of feeling around.
The top of the pattern is: Reverse, 1st, 3rd, 5th and the bottom is 2nd and 4th.
You aren't the only one to have a problem finding reverse for the first time! Been there!

Thanks Bill,

Then I was right, if it is up with the shifter, that is a pull on the shift rod at the transaxle. And, with my shift set up, to the left translates to clockwise motion of the shift rod*.

When I first setup my shifter mechanisms, I completely missed that little exta twist to depress the reverse detent. This had the complete range of torsion motion being from the CCW stop to the CW first stop. And I wondered why I couldn't find reverse :-). Luckily, there was enough adjustability to put the extra motion back in.

*shift rod = the rod protruding from the transaxle

Regards,
Lynn

Lynn,

Don't feel bad about not feeling the detent at the shift rod end. I couldn't find it on the SHIFTER end! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smirk.gif
I tried every shift pattern known to man, before finally finding reverse! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif

Thanks guys - I knew it was in there somewhere - but damned if I could find it - well it's off to the garage with my new found wisdom!!

thanks again!

What the hell, when is this car gone move FORWARD? Reverse should be the least of your worries /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

Besides, you can't see S**T out back any way /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
