Most people compare Snopes to Moses coming down from the mountain. Just because Snopes says it doesn't make it the truth. Due to their political leaning they can slant "the truth" to their advantage. You can say "oh they wouldn't do that", but think about it. There are plenty of websites that talk about Snopes "mom and pop" operation. Do a search

You are correct. Snopes does not "make it so" but they do have enough information to provide a staring point for verification of many emails/posts/etc.
And remember Moses' was actually carrying 20 commandments when he dropped one tablet and it shattered thus causing the commandments like "thou shalt not hassle" and "Be not an asshole" to be left out of the Bible.
