If any of you are having problems with your electronic speedometer(s), after spending $200.00 on proximity sensors I found a fellow who spec'd and fixed my speedo. It works again. Hall effect sensors for speedometers, dah.

Yes. It's 1 wire to ground, 1 wire to switch 12v, 1 wire to your speedo (in my case, autometer ultra-lite). That's it.

To calibrate it you switch 12v on, set it to calibrate mode, then turn a screw inside until your speedo reads 37mph. If I recall correctly mine maxed out at 36mph, so I'm 1mph slow, but who cares, that's pretty darn accurate.

Speedo reads perfectly (no jerking, etc..). Only downside is it usually takes a minute or two after it's been sitting for a while (days) to re-aquire satellite position, but then it's fine.

Just to complete the picture note that for that kind of money Speedhut supplies entire speedometers with the GPS electronics built-in. They also have a "keep-alive" input that keeps the GPS running when everthing else is off.

yes, except you have to buy their gauges.

I had a set of autometer ultra-lites - I did NOT want to have a different speedo (there are several manufacturers out there who have a GPS-based speedo fyi, not just speedhut) so I had to find a way to get GPS working with the autometer set.

I thought it would be an easy task, but it isn't - GPS units get a set of co-ordinates so you need someway to translate that to the pulses that a speedo reads .... the above unit is the only device on the market that does this (that I could ever find)

Will it also work in tunnels when there is no GPS signal?

We don't have tunnels here so I don't know. However, with tall buildings and overpasses it's never had a problem with the signal being blocked.
