The three 12 volt DC power adapters that come standard on the SPF GT40 are made of a thin rubber material that does not have much longevity and they are also bright red as seen below. They definitely fall under the category of butt ugly. This mod describes how to change them with a more durable black plastic version.
This is a simple modification. To access the adapter above the ignition key, remove the six screws that hold the console in place. To access the adapter to the left of the steering column, remove the 4 screws that hold the panel in place. To access the adapter in the door, you will need to remove the screws that hold the map tray in place then remove the screws that hold the control panel in place. The adapters are removed from their respective panels by unscrewing them from the rear.
The replacement covers are from Toyota vehicles and are available from any Toyota parts department. The figure below shows the adapter with the replacement cover next to it. Thanks to Steve Cioffi P2125 for sourcing the plastic covers.
In order to make the covers fit this application, the plastic barrel needs to be removed. See below.
The easiest (and cleanest) was to do this is to “grind” off the excess on a disk or belt sander. Using this method allows for a smoother flange that is square. Be careful not to cut too much of the flange away otherwise there is no base for the adapter to fit into and hold down to the panel. Note in the photo, the small “ears” on the inside the the flange ring. These ears are what holds the cover to the panel when the adapter is inserted.
The last two photos below show the finished modification with the cover in the open and closed positions.
