The good years

Hi folks I am another Kiwi new to this site. So how do I explain why I am here. Best to say that I am considering retirement and will be releasing investment funds. A lot of me time and hopefully the ability to make the most of it. A life time passion for cars need a reward! The most beautiful car ever designed and built in my opinion is the Mk 11 GT40. It is also representative of the glory years of New Zealand motor sport when three drivers from NZ wrote a stunning chapter at Le Mans.
Naturally when I purchase it will be a true replication of the 1966 first over the line! with one exception. I would like to name the drivers McLaren and Amon on the side of the car. I came across this site as I researched the various options that are available with regards kits, or new built.
I appreciate this site and of course will welcome comments from those who have been there and done that!

kind regards

Barry (Chushin)

Barry,if a true replica is what you're after, inside and out, you'll find an up to the minute discussion still going on under the thread name of that very question, what is the most original replica.Opinions vary and they're like a******s - everybody's got one. It would seem that the Gelscoe product gets the top vote but Brown's and Gox are close too,(and some cars are available from the original maker such as Holman and Moody's MKII) from the comments on that thread. It depends on how much time you have to spend and work you're willing to do. And none of these are cheap. Realize they are ALL replicas,no matter how exact. Also, you will have to wait longer for one of these exact copies. This is a fabulous place to do your homework. Dig in,listen, use the forum search function - if you have a question, the answer is most likely right here. A.J.

Welcome aboard Barry, not sure that building/buying a GT40 of any kind can/could be considered a form of retirement, obsession is probably a better description, be interesting to see what you eventually settle on as 'your' GT40 of choice! Enjoy.

Welcome Barry. Whereabout in NZ are you?

Brian Stewart from Dunedin is doing a lovely dead nuts accurate replica of the McLaren/Amon #1046 using a Dave Brown CCD chassis. If you haven't already, check out some of his posts. Here's a link to his Build Log.

Doing it Brians way is a real mission and my hat is off to him for his perseverance and research. Most just take the easy route of buying the kit that suits them, fit whatever mechanicals will work for them, and dress it up to look more or less the way they want it. Good luck with whatever you decide to do.

Cheers,

Russ

Hi Barry and Welcome

Lots of kiwis here and lots to be learned from this site. I too would be interested which part of the country you live in and which direction you intend going with your GT40 build or purchase.
