TVR powered GT40!!

Since buying my early KVA (non-c type) GT40 I have had numerous problems crop up. Apart from the bad set up of a Rover V8 mated to a Citroen 4 speed box the suspension is quite frankly, dangerous!. I have had to make a choice of either selling the car on or attempting to rectify the bad construction. I have chosen to strip the car and start again.

So I now have on its way to me a TVR lump, Renault 5 speed gearbox and various suspension parts. I am sure that as I go other parts will be required, but it is great to know that this site has loads of helpful information and members.

A big thanks to Tornado and MDA in the UK who have given me great assistance. I look forward to seeing how a TVR engine performs in a GT40 replica!!

My limited knowledge of TVRs I believe they used (amongst other engines) a Rover V8 and also a de-tuned version of a Tyrel F1 race engine. Is this correct or did I just dream it all /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Yep, they started out using Ford v6 engines (3000M and earlier), then moved on to the Rover lump. This progressed over time to 4.6 litres, then replaced by the AJP engine in mid 90s.

Simon, good luck wqith the strip down. As you've said someone on here is bound to have come across any problems we can possibly think up at some time or other /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Simon, if you are going to expend that much effort, why not go to a Ford crate motor and Audi trans? I bet it would make life easier in the long run.

When I bought the car I was hoping that none of this work would be needed. However after looking at the car in greater detail the orginal set up would never work. You are quite right, I could have gone for a Ford motor (for the sake of originality) but I have some good contacts for TVR parts because I own a Griffith 500. I got a reasonable deal on the engine and they have the advantage of being fairly light weight. I have had no problems with my TVR and it has way enough power for me. I can see if someone is making a car from scratch it makes sense to keep it as close to the real thing as possible. This does not matter to me really, I just want a car that is reliable and that I can have some fun with!.
I hope to attend some of the meetings the UK GT40 club have in the south. It would be great to see some other cars and find out what I am letting myself in for!!!

Regards

Simon
