I know that an election is the democratic way of choosing our politicians but so many are in safe seats and get re-elected by the "useful idiots" who vote for the party without considering whether their candidate is worthy of the role. A good example is that a number of candidates at our last election who had previously been caught fiddling their expenses, and therefore indicated that they had no integrity at all, were re-elected by their gullible constituents!
With regard to the House of Lords, many of us have been saying for years that all its members should be elected. I suspect that most governments want to keep it the way it is as it is a useful tool for rewarding political favours (and monetary contributions) and also enables them to appoint people to government office without going through the bother of them having to stand for election.
