Who owns the rights to the GT40 Body?

I heared that the Japanese model company was put off making a 1/12th model kit of the Ford GT(40) because they did not know who owned the rights.
Incidentially the original Ford GT's MKI and MKII's chassis numbers were prefix GT with no reference to GT40. The original conception of Ford's racing program when they could not purchase Ferrari was called the 'Ford GT' program. So when and why were the prefix GT40 introduced?

The first car with the prefix GT40 in Ronnie Spains book is was built in March 1965. Why this was done??? Where did the prefix come from officially (I know its the height). On whose authorisation was it implemented? It was out of line with Ford's naming of race cars. Indeeed they were etheir given a name i.e. Cobra, Galaxie from their production name or in the case of bought in and rival cars. Lola MK6 it heritage versions and the Lola T70 it date of conception. So really it was the press that started this? Perhaps it should of been called the Ford GT64? 65, 66 and so on. The John Wyers cars were not official Ford entries. Do not forget some of the subsequent Ford racing cars went done the dateline the P68, P69, G7A, HonkerII, Cougar Cobra, GT70, GT90. Names and times except for G7A (J9) which used a J car chassis. The other car that has a prefix outside of my simple explaination was the C100??

John Horseman in his book considers the cars produce at FAV/JWA Banbury Road Slough as original Ford GT40's. According to his count the last original Ford GT40 was P1084. Even though in Ronnie Spains book it states that P1085 was the last chassis to be numbered by the works.

Safirs MKV continued the numbering after Tennant chassis numbers. And I suppose Superperformance will continue on.

As for the Ford GT name any Ford car that races in the GT saloon catergory could of been call this Cortinas, Mustangs, Cobras and so on.

The only thing that is lacking is the word 'Ford' which can only be used on an original.

It's only my humble opinion, but it appears the people at Safir are nothing but squatters on the name. No better than people who reserve web pages in the names of celebrities or businesses, hoping to cash in on it when the rightful owner wants to use it. Lucky for them, Ford didn't want to waste their time suing over it (or at least not yet). Who would have thought that you would have to trademark the serial numbers from your own cars to be able to use them later? If I was Ford, I would have squashed Safir like the bugs they are. 7.5%??? You greedy bastards. Asking $40M for something they came up with in the first place? It's a little different when someone sells an item with the Ford name on it that costs $100... It's a little different when scum bags ask for that percentage on a $150,000 car. Mr. Wood, people like you make me sick. You deserve every bit of the derogatory press you receive and more!

Nice first post Leif... And digging up a thread that hasn't seen any action in over a year. Some people would call you a troll...

Post will be reported...

Safir Engineering aren't squatters. You need to get your information right before you spout from your pie hole. Safir built some continuation cars and then noticed that the GT40 trademark was available. This was a long time ago. Ford is to blame for not picking up the trademark.

And the $40M story you allude to is incorrect. Ford never proclaimed the car to be a "GT40". That name was applied by the press.

Allan, Lola T70 stands for "Type 70" and it was drawn up in 1964. It followed the Type 60. Not that there's anything wrong with that...

I've just found this post thanks to Leif, an individual lacking in foresight tact or indeed commonsense. Perhaps the community is better off without your input.:lipsrsealed:

Well done to Bob. You had the foresight to buy something that Ford Didn't want.......and when they do want it you should be able to sell what you own for as much or as little profit as you like. Simple as that. Enthusiasts don't go all weak at the knees because they get an offer. They accept what they beleive is fair for their little dream or their passion.

Fair play to you Bob, an interesting story which like everything has two sides and in the end is an interesting postscript to the original GT40 and more importantly perhaps shows how little Ford cares about it's history......

The comment about the term GT and it's touring car status here in Aus and elsewhere on this thread kind of illustrates the point further.

And now with the Ford GT in the FIA GT Championship (and doing quite well!) developed by what I think is an independant team who have seemingly modified the body for racing, the whole story can now start over again! That should keep this thread going the next 40 years or so.....

ERA has the MK-II rear clip and front clip made 16 years ago. The ERA-MK-II ran out of gas in the highway at the SAAC at Portland in 1992. They did a blue and white (Shelby's Ken Miles winning car that ended 2nd) in the early 90's. It was cheaper for Ford to request ERA for 3 complete MK-II cars (they already had 1) and ship them to England for Goodwood.

Are you talking about the 2003 display at the Goodwood Festival of Speed? Or the actual first three 1966 finishing Le Mans cars? Which went on to parade at Le Mans in 2003?
Regards Allan

There was a series of posts discussing the three cars in the tilt up display at Goodwood. Mark Sibley and Chris Melia both had some comments about who built or supplied what for those cars. ERA was never mentioned as supplying any of it. As I recall the owners of those cars also had some comments and they didn't include ERA.

Mr Melia said that he built the rear clip for the MK-II for Goodwood for 3 replicas. My reply was for him
The cars on the 2003 tilt display were MDA's I helped Chris Melia by lending him a Japanese car magazine with P1015 in it.
The first replica cars GT40 with the right tail for the MKII were SAFIR's. The ERA's were not involved in Goodwood 2003 at all. Regards Allan

Johan the Lola T70 was indeed Type 70 as you said. But it never followed a Type 60 as far as I know. Its replacement was a T160 and that was followed by a T163. So concurrent numbering does not always play a part. Since the first Lola was a Mark 1 and the 1963 Lola GT was a Mark 6. Incendentially I was corrected in my assumption that the GT40 was the only Ford sportcar named by its height. The Ford C100 was also call by its height of 100cm.

Allan, the first Lola was the Broadley Special. It was named Lola, but was not "a Lola". It was "The Lola". I know this is overkill for this thread, but since it is the 50th anniversary of Lola Cars (the company"), here are the Lola Types in order of appearance, from the Lola Heritage website that I am involved with by the way so please visit (Lola Heritage). One thing is for sure. They could not make up their minds on how to name the cars..
The Chassis numbers give more information still. For instance, a T70 can have a chassis number starting with SL70,SL71, SL73, SL75, SL76, HU71, HU76 etc...and still be a T70. SL stands for Slough and HU stands for Huntington.
The numbering was consecutive and the missing numbers wwere updates to a series that never materialized.
I am not able to answer the question which forms the basis of this thread, but I am sure that the GT40 would not be the thing of beauty it is today without the involvement of Lola.

Hi Johan
You are right about the T60 preceding the T70. But my point was on the numbering being different for each manufacturer. Obviously Lola went for concurrent chassis/type numbering which did not relate to a particular type of class of racing. That is why I had no knowledge of T60 since it was not a Can Am or sports car. As for your point about the GT40 it has Lola to thank for its existance since the development work on the suspension was done initially using the Lola GT Mk6 as a buck for testing. As for the name GT40 the first twelve chassis made including GT/103 the 1965 Daytona winner. GT106, GT107 (the two 427 1965 longnose big block cars). Were denoted as GT/.Therefore Carrol Shelby is correct in saying a 1965 "Ford GT" won Daytona. There was a reference on the last chassis GT112 to GT40. But the GT40/P was only given to the production cars with the definative nose. As far as I can tell although some of the production chassis were in existance before this date the bodywork was not the GT40. This was first shown in production form at Le Mans in May/June 1965 P1006 FAV entry.

The FIA homologation papers #224 Group 4 sports cars issued 1 february 1966 showed the chassis numbers to commence from GT40/101 and GT40P/1000. the model is designated GT40 and further that the minimum number of 50 cars was constructed between 1 jan65 and 31 dec 65. hence the papers were issued 1 feb 1966.
A Ford GT40/103 won daytona in 1965
