Why Leave?

It's in their genes. They have to leave, travel the world and have a song and dance about how tragic it all is and how the cursed English are to blame for everything that's wrong with Ireland.

"Where the bayonets flash & the rifles crash - to the echo of the Thompson Gun"

La-li-la-lil-la....

PS. You might ask the same question about Scotland...
PPS. Same answer.

Its probably one of the most beautiful countries in the world along with the warmest most welcoming people. Unfortunately thats all there is to the place and anyone that wants to get on or better their life leaves. The few Irishmen that I do know are very successful businessmen that left poverty and hardship back in Ireland, something many of us could not comprehend.

Bob.

Ignore Keith he has gone off on one :)

You should never say "Ignore that persons answer" - it may not be to your taste but it may contain elements of truth that should be considered.

Interestingly, during the advent of the Celtic Tiger, net immigration rose exponentially as ex emigrants immigrated again (or something like that)

Now it's all gone flat, they've gone again... :)

I have done some serious business with serious people South of the Border for over 40 years. There are some very astute businessmen down there that deal mainly in cash.

Many of them own horses.

These are people to whom the border between North & South is essential to further their business success and want to maintain the political status quo.

They do not have a history of sharing their largesse with the population at large.

Ireland has swallowed more EEC grant money than many other member states, yet not much ever materialised as promised. Where did the money go?

Ah well, you see, there's the rub.

It's a tragic tale don't you see.....

My answer was only in cheek Keith :)

Did Delorean not take a fair chunk of Irish money and run????

I thought a lot of big business set up shop in Ireland because of its beneficial tax structure. Back in the Nineties, my wife's job at a huge pharmaceutical was outsourced to Ireland.
