ZF DS-25-0 Transaxle

To the knowers of all facts GT40,

Can serial #233 of a DS-25-0 transaxle be traced back to a real GT40?

Thanks Graham

By the serial #, do you know the year it was made? It's in a FiberFab Valkyrie kit car that was built in 1967.

Been there done that....
I would first look in 'GT40 An Individual History and Race Record' by Ronnie Spain.....
Also do the rear/mid/main casting numbers match?

I did a quick check with number close to #233 (and mine #135) the chassis number and 'type' of car is also noted (some omissions tea has arrived!!!)

#93 1066 Mk I Road Car
#145 1102 Mk III
#147 1105 Mk III
#150 1063 Mk I Road Car

#217 1067 Mk I Road Car (with Mk II rear)

I asked ZF about #135 and....

"you are right, the ZF 5 DS-25 was among others also for the Ford GT 40.
On the transmission is a small type plate with a 10 digit number starting with 1031.

If the type plate still exists I can with the complete 10 digit number tell you for which vehicle this transmission originally was, most likely it was the GT 40, but it was also in some Matra and De Tomaso cars, even the Mercedes C111 was with the 5 DS-25."

They don't have records for anything before #1031..... and it was salmon, sea bass, new potatoes, peas washed down with a mug of coffee.....of course!

Yes, the tag is still there. The 10 digit # is 1031 000 002

I cant comment on prices only to say I spent £11500 for mine a few years ago and had to wait for a full service after I bought it to find out it was in very good condition. At the very least if I could see the box I would want to pop off the top plate to see if the crown wheel bolts have been wired. Is it in the correct orientation for a gt40? test all the gears... and after all is said and done its worth what someone is willing to pay for it.

Also check the internals for rust. I have seen some that were nice on the outside and very rusty on the inside.

So what's the cost of a new ZF these days, I thought it was ~$16k? My ZF cost $8,500 to rebuild and it was in pretty good condition, I've not seen a used ZF any higher than $10k, but supply and demand can drive prices crazy I guess... maybe the history on this one adds some value?

Assuming this is true, I just heard RBT and Quaife haven't been producing transaxles this year. As a result, there's a shortage that has owners of new GT40's unable to complete their cars.

No point in me holding on to this if others are really in need of it. If someone wants it, let me know.

Hi Doc,
Do you happen to have any reference to 263 from your investigations.
It was sourced out of the US and story goes that it was a spare for a team running a 40 at Daytona and so on ?
