ZF Transaxle wanted

Very few and far between second hand nowadays as Panteras are worth good money now so none being broken for spares.

RBT in the USA make the ZF boxes as per original
http://www.rbttrans.com
Quaife in the UK make the ZFQ which has the exact same external fitting arrangements as the ZF but is different inside. They also do a bell housing for Ford and Chevvy small blocks.

Cheers
Mike

What Ive heard on the track, you deffo don't want a Quaife as it will fail, faster than you think. RBT is the source for ZF gearboxes.

Check out the Pantera International forum; one member in France selling a ZF requiring assembly another used for sale.
https://pantera.infopop.cc/topic/for-sale-zf-5ds-25-2-gearbox
https://pantera.infopop.cc/topic/zf-gearbox-for-sale was asking $10.5K

Here's another in France (Owner speaks English I'm told)
https://www.leboncoin.fr/equipement_auto/1539113100.htm/

I know a Pantera parts vendor in Carson City NV that had one refurbished, 3.77 R&P and already flipped for GT40 application

Failing all that there is a ZF specialist in Essex you can reach out to; Paul Flemming, Maldon, Essex. Tel: 07710 778672

Julian, Thanks for taking the time to find the info. however I am aware of these. the top and bottom links are the same gearbox, ( In Paris ). The photos show it to be in poor condition. The center link is one foe sale in the States but of unknown condition and the additional cost of delivery makes it too risky to buy. I have tried to contact Paul but he does not return calls !, however I might try again. Thanks again Peter

I know of a ZF 5DS-25-2 here in Oregon that is likely available. Price unknown. A friend of mine has a custom paint and body shop, had a customer with a Lambo kit deal using a ZF. Project got dropped but the ZF is still at the shop. I can probably get owner contact info. I am told it was a good unit when purchased. Been sitting several years in dry storage. I last saw it a couple months back.

Thanks, I am reluctant to buy unseen from the US due to the additional costs of importing. However I might be interested if the price was agreeable. Please let me know with more details .
Regards, peter

I (and Julian above) have a friend in Paris who has three Panteras and works on others for his friends. He just bought a ZF from Kirby Schrader in Houston (who is also a SPF owner and lurker here) and will be swapping it out this weekend on his friend’s car. I think he was planning on rebuilding the old one, but he might sell it as-is (needing a rebuild and conversion to GT40 orientation), which you would have done by Paul (who is a fantastic guy and I have always found him to be very responsive to emails and phone calls?). Starting off with a known quantity is always a good thing. If you’re interested I can link you up—just let me know....

Hi Mike and Julian, Yes I would be interested, I spoke to Paul just yesterday, I found him to be very helpful indeed. Please keep in touch. Many thanks, Peter.

Peter,

It’s a small world. The ZF on Leboncoin is actually being sold by a good friend of ours, Patrick Hals (in Belgium). He bought it from another good friend, Forest Goodhart who was the president of the Pantera Club of Northern California. He got it from yet another good friend, Larry Stock of Pantera Parts Connection (Julian used to work for Larry). And Larry gets his gearboxes rebuilt by Lloyd Butfoy at RBT Transmissions. The last time I was at Patrick’s house, he had the ZF crate on display at the end of his upstairs hallway, instead of a table.

So it is apparently a gearbox with zero time, rebuilt by Lloyd, which is literally as good as a ZF can possibly get. The asking price is pretty steep, but perhaps there is room for negotiation. I would call Patrick (he speaks excellent English) and ask him about its history and specifications to confirm that I’m right. It may have a taller 5th gear or taller ring and pinion? I don’t know the details. It’s possible he used it briefly, or not. In any case, it’s not just some random guy selling what could be a box of junk, and after you speak with him, you will probably conclude it’s well worth buying.

Then it’s down to whether you guys can come to an agreement on the price.....

Hi Mike, Thanks for taking the trouble. I was made aware of this Trans axle via the Pantera Forum, about a month ago, 13,000 euros, in Lille. Best wishes, Peter.

Larry confirmed he sold the one he had a while back for $14K. Personally I think there are only two ways to go; buy a cheap box (probably in the order of $4-5K) you know will need full refurbishment or buy one that has been fully rebuilt. An unknown entity could cost you dear and still need a rebuild, second gear syncro is a common wear item. When you consider it's about $2,500 just to get a ZF professionally opened up and assessed prior to parts replacement, 13,000 euros isn't outrageous for a rebuilt box. My Pantera ZF rebuild with addition of a tall 5th was $8,500 (the 5th added $1,500 for parts while it was open). Also consider any Pantera ZF will need disassembly for flipping the ring gear and drilling the oil passages anyway, also Lloyd does far more extensive work in re-orienting a box than some GT40 manufacturers would have you believe is necessary. And all of a sudden the roughly $16K price tag for a new ZF (with the more modern components/design) doesn't look so bad.

Even the G50/52 in my Ultima was a $15,000 gearbox when fully built out for the HP.

Hi I am Michael Malcewicz and a new member. I would be interested in finding out more about this ZF Transaxle. I am in need of one for a project I am working on at the moment. You can email me at [email protected]. I live in Texas, so I am state side.

Uh...both of you guys seem a bit lost.

Peter—Michael isn’t offering to sell you one from Texas. He is wanting to BUY the one in Belgium, but is asking here about it for some reason, instead of asking the seller (who is not a member here). Import costs from Belgium to the UK would be minimal, although who knows how things might change after a hard Brexit!

And Michael—I’m not selling anything. If you want to buy the one that is for sale, you need to talk to the seller. Realize that import costs back to the USA would drive the price up high enough that you would likely be better off buying one in the USA (or a new one).

Good luck to you both! :)

Hi this is Michael Malcewicz an I am new here. I am interested in this ZF Transaxle you are talking about that is in Oregon. I live in Texas and am state side. Email me at [email protected] ( or call me at 512-630-1885) with more info and how to contact the ZF'S owner. You said it was at a body shop of a friend and the lambo project fell thru. Do you know yet what the owner of the ZF is asking for it?
