Sounds like the Ventures but it was one of those Hot Rod groups from the early '60s called the Duals, as in "dual carberators", the instrumental bit was "Stick Shift" from '61. The vocal bit after that is actually George Hamilton IV but I am sure he would prefer to forget that.

By the way, that was Robert Mitcham isself singing Thunder Road at the end. The only known song he was ever known to have recorded and I think it's fairly obvious why..

Slightly OT. Is there a listing of the car related songs from this era? Being old enough to remember them means I'm too old to seek them out without childish help. If I know what I'm looking for, the children can maybe hunt them down for my ongoing enjoyment.

This music is so much a part of my earlier life. And it still sounds bloody magic.

Glenn,
most people call them Lakes Pipes, the sort of short exhaust pipe the early rodders would rig up to by pass the silencers or even eight individual pipes, to run at the dry bed lakes for speed attempts, Bonneville, El Mirage etc.
You can still get the mechanical exhaust cut outs that you yank on a cable to bypass the silencer and feed your "Dual Lakes Pipes". You don't even have to go near Bonneville to use them, the Edgeware Road will be fine !
