Is the right to bear arms outdated.

If we are to the point where we have to arm teachers and put poilce in the schools in order to protect your right to a hobby, yeah, that's not really the vision I had for a better America.

When will you accept that committing crime is not part of our "hobby"? When will you even acknowledge that our country is easy on people who actually commit the crimes?

When will you accept the fact that your hobby has created a society so awash in guns that regardless of how responsible YOU are, things like Newtown happen here with a frequency and scope not seen anywhere else in the civilized world?

For once - I have no words.

"The only way to deter a bad guy with a gun is to have a good guy with a gun"

Holy shit - someone actually said that today.

Following the NRA statement (above) it would seem that the USA does not want to change. In a lot of thinking, it (USA) is considered so far out of touch that negotiation on a level field of play is not possible.

I hope the NRA does not represent the feelings of the average US citizen, because in that, lies the problem with many of your foreign policy strategies...

And, how the world views you..... It's a sad day. C'mon guys, you can do better than this!

We are now going to be in the rather weird situation that although certain forum members agree with me, they can't admit it because they think I am anti American. But please remember, the nuke that hits you destroys me too....

Very late edit: Perhaps, stupidly, I was looking for an "American Spring"

When will you accept than a complete ban will not stop crime? Only in a world of fairy dust, magic wands and unicorns will a 100% ban ever work. As I will state again look at heroin and cocaine. Law abiding people don't have it, but there is still a drug epidemic in this country.

When will you actually read what I write rather than make shit up you think I said and then respond to that?

I'm not in favor of a ban on guns. I'm not in favor of a ban on any specific type of gun other than full automatics.

Read, think then type. Not type, type, type with no thinking and reading.

Jeff, how many times do you get shot at a day? You make it sound like you live on a battlefield with statements like "... awash in guns".

I also don't see the second amendment as a hobby either. More like a duty.

BH,

I hate the foreign policy of this country. Bring all of our troops home, close all bases abroad and work on securing our country. Stop the aid abroad until we fix this country. When the UN requests our assistance (military muscle), send a tug boat with a water cannon. Ok, maybe not a tug boat, but you get my point (I hope.)

Btw... I'm wearing my nomex boxers and smiling while typing this because I can't wait to see the replies. ;-)

That's an absolutely brilliant idea! Can you get that passed into US Law?

I'm not the only U.S. subject who would like to see that.

As for the middle east, they have been fighting over the same patch of sand for thousands if years. Anyone who thinks they can stop it anytime soon, is smoking crack. Israel will get pissed, and without the U.S. holding them back, will open up a can of whoopass on everyone who threaten them. The UN will then blame us. Al Qaida will try more attacks across the world including here. Hopefully by having our troops home we can prevent it.

Far fetched??

It's a great idea but bringing home thousands of trained killers with an attitude problem at this time may not be the best option.

Needless to say, there is much debate about this problem elsewhere in the world, and also needless to say if you are not American, you can suffer some abuse if you dare to comment - and that's in an ENGLISH newspaper..

I select one at random from the pages of an International Newspaper of Some Standing: Quote.

"Dear Brits:
Had we not 'Lend-Leased' your defenseless asses all-manner of weaponry back in WWII, you'd all be goose-stepping about and nodding you heads to Wagner. Gun ownership and self determination was bred out of you a long time ago. And unless I'm mistaken, didn't you almost have what's left of 'Old Blighty' burned to the ground by a bunch of drunken, jobless yabos in hoodies recently?"

Gung Ho! I wonder which 'lobby' he supports?

Holy shit - someone actually said that today.

Really...you actually have a problem with that? Okay then, what would YOU suggest as an effective alternative defense against a gun??? Seriously. What? I'd like to 'hear' it. I've just broken into your house. I have a gun in my hand. I haven't made up my mind yet whether I'm going to shoot you or not. What is your plan to deal with that? You're sitting in your college classroom. I burst through the door with a gun in each hand. What defense are you going to employ in that situation?

That's odd...I don't recall reading about any of you folks 'across the pond' bad mouthing the U.S., its citizens, its 'gun culture', OR its "foreign policy" when all the 'gun nuts' wearing U.S. military uniforms showed up with their guns on D-Day back in 1944. 'Interesting...

Obviously, I didn't "walk away" long enough. I think I'll remedy that...

I can not think of a word VILE enough to discribe the NRA!

The NRA will never do anything to stop the murder, in fact the slaughter of cilderen is like Chritmas to them!

The greater the slaughter the better they like it! This last week, just like after every mass muder of inocents, donations to the NRA went up big time!

The greater the slaughter, the bigger the outrage, it's like money in the bank for them. They gain new members and receive massive donstions, which they use to buy politians to insure the continued slaughter of inocents!

Their answer to this latest outrage is "we just need a good guy with a gun in each school" that will fix the problem.......................

Bullshit, there were two good guys with guns a Columbine, the slaughter went unchecked!

At this point, I am too angry for words.......................

Hahaha! Hit & Run! I like that...

It's a very effective strategy. Larry don't "walk away" nothing ever gets solved like that, and if you think the insult stings in any way - it doesn't. We've got used to it mate :)

What you say is factually correct - never take a knife to a gun fight. Nobody is saying, least of all me, to ban guns in the USA. It would be impossible. But perhaps a different way of issuing permits to reduce the proliferation might be a start... What do you think? I understand that there is a kind of worrying trend in gun ownership in the US. The number of guns sold is continuing to rise exponentially, but the number of households owning them have diminished, which can only mean 'stockpiling'. To what end do you think?

Like many foreigners, I don't actually get it, so I am relying on you to lay on us some meaningful debate. Trust me, I am not in any way belittling America or your rights to do exactly as you please, but you do have fellow countrymen with similar anxieties regarding gun ownership - and if you wish to pick on a foreigner, it will only be seen as easy meat.

I actually get gun ownership. It's a fantastically powerful and silent icon when it's not used, but when it is.... it takes on a whole different aspect.

May I ask, have you ever been injured in a gun incident? Not military, but in a regular domestic or work place related scenario?
