"People sleep peaceably in their beds at night only because rough men stand ready to do violence on their behalf." - Geo. Orwell

"This will remain the land of the free only so long as it is the home of the brave." - Elmer Davis

And given our present circumstances, as a nation, we might do well to remember this one:

"I do not fear an army of lions, if they are led by a lamb." - Alexander the Great

To all who signed the blank check...and especially to all those whose check was cashed: :chug:

While we are thinking of the served, serving and the fallen, lets make damned sure that we keep the politicians honest & don't allow them to cause the huge sacrifices made by these young men to be in vain.

That should be our No.1 Priority. This means engaging regularly with your elected representatives.

Nobody should opt out of this duty.

Keith,

I know we may not agree on everything.
However, i fully concur with your comments.
Those who have served, know better than most what incompetence
the politicians and indeed the Ministry of Defence are capable of.
One such related occurence springs to mind.
It was around the time of the decision being made, in * The Houses of Shite *
whether we would involve ourselves in Syria.
An old school friend of mine who served with HAC approached his conservative mp at a public meeting. He beratted the mp, that mission creep would be unavoidable and that we would yet again be in deep up to our knecks for the long run.
This was the politician's reply.
" Are you one of those pacifists ? "
Well, you can imagine what was the answer.
I daren't write it. But it involved a free holiday, with normal immigration channels being sidelined. I believe RAF Lyneham was mentioned.
It should be implicit that evey politician does some sort of military service.

absolutely agree, in a combat zone too!<!-- google_ad_section_end -->

Ten and a half years of service in the Air Force, with about five years as an Aerial Gunner. I was retired for back injuries, knee injuries, a tbi, and PTSD. Anyways, I'm continuing the mission as I go to school to become an emergency department nurse, or something similar. Thank goodness for the GI Bill.

I served 8 years in the Air Force as a Test Engineer. Blew out my knee at Squadron Officers School and got medically discharged. I still work for the Air Force as a contractor.

That makes 3 of us...AND THAT SHOULD DARN WELL BE A BASIC REQUIREMENT FOR ANYONE RUNNING FOR THE OFFICE OF PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES. And I would hasten to add; ESPECIALLY for anyone seeking that office.

The idea that some pencil neck politician who's never worn the uniform of this country is even remotely qualified to override the advice of his ADMIRALS AND GENERALS and tell them what they ought to do/what they're going to do in a military situation is ridiculous on the face of it IMHO.

I'm shuttin' up now...

It's good to see the recent returning veterans are getting much better treatment and recognition than those of the Vietnam era, even if the VA has stumbled a bit. When I returned to the States I was dumbfounded to see a group of young folks throwing rocks at our transport bus. I was given a haircut, a dress uniform that didn't fit ( plus, no rank, unit ID, or any identifying insignia) and a voucher for an airplane ticket to the nearest big airport to my home, on a stand-by basis. I came right out of the boonies straight to the processing center on a 20 something hour flight, receiving no debriefing, no exit interview and was out on the street in just a few hours. As I sat in the airport in Washington State hoping there would be a seat on a flight soon, no one stopped to welcome me home, nothing. Arrived home on the night of July 3rd - fireworks going off everywhere and people laughing as I ducked down in reflex. So for me, the spectre of Veteran's Day has an edge that's never worn off, although I do pay respect for those who went before and those who went after, prepared to give their lives to preserve our freedom. Those men and women have certainly earned our respect and gratitude.
As for the concept that every candidate for President of the U.S. ,or any free nation, should have served in the military and experienced a combat situaton or hazardous duty, I agree....but remember - that alone doesn't qualify or in anyway render, the candidate to be worthy of the office, think back a few years......
My thanks to all the forum Vets for "signing that blank check".
