Hi guys - I hope I'm not being tooo much of an idiot here, but I really don't understand a lot about EBay; so how can an item with a starting bid of $40K be listed as no reserve?

Surely, $40k is the reserve?

Keith,

Not necessarily.

Often a starting bid is merely to prevent people from entering lots of bids that are not even in the same ballpark. The "reserve" on this is effectively $40,001.

If it was a "reserve auction, even with an opening bid of $40,000, the reserve could easily be $60,000.

It is probable that a single bid of $40,001 would win this auction, however.

In a case like this the seller is saying that there is no hidden reserve. That is, the lot will be genuinely on the market with the first bid at that price.
