A newbie saying Hello to everyone

Morning (or evening or whatever it may be wherever you are) All,

just a quick introduction to myself: I'm a long-time ex-pat Brit, currently in Hungary. I've always loved the sight and sound of the GT40 but considered it way beyond my humble means. My current daily driver is a BMW 850Ci and I was wondering yesterday what I might consider getting to replace it if I have to as I may be relocating to a place where I cannot import my BMW. This led me to thinking about the CAV GT and from there onto Tornado and GT40 replicas in general. A quick Google later and I found this place.

This is an excellent site and I'm sure I will learn much by reading and lurking. I don't have a definite plan to get into GT40 ownership just yet - two children and a wife plus plenty of other costs make it difficult to see how just yet but who knows, it's an itch that may need to be scratched plenty at some time and if I learn enough from this site and you good people I will be far better prepared to take the plunge.

Meanwhile I will lurk and read and learn and learn and learn.

Cheers,
Jason

Welcome Jason, I echo what Graham has said, although don't ask which make of 40 is best as you will get several different answers! Hope Budapest is treating you well, I go to Tatabanya quite often, but not in the 40 (Just a little too far to drive). Best of luck in persuading the family that you "NEED" a 40; after that it's just a matter of when not if.

agree with the collegues.

My reco for you is to ensure first how to clearly identify how to register a 'kitcar' in Hungary based on an existing European registered car as such.If this is no real hassle, then you may pursue a potential acquisition (unless you buy an original ...).Another option for you would be to buy a car in the UK and keep it registered there if you can subscribe the car with a UK address (only problem here is to have yearly MOT to be done in UK)

Good luck to you

Fred

Thanks for the welcome everyone, much appreciated.

@ Fred - Hungary has some strange ideas about importing cars - when we moved here in 2009 I researched importing my BMW, I found that Hungary is the only EU member country that levies a so-called registration tax, the amount of money they wanted for my BMW was over Euro 8,000 so I didn't bother. The official solution is to register and pay the tax. The unofficial solution is to leave it registered elsewhere and just drive it here anyway, being Hungary no-one much cares and you will find plenty of foreign registered cars on the road here. With my BMW I make an annual pilgramage for the MOT etc and drive on full 12 months EU wide insurance - a number of insurers will offer this possibility now. Having said that, I don't use the BMW in the winter anyway.
If I go ahead with a GT40 project it would be in the UK, I still have a UK address which is very useful to have. The solution would be to build/buy and register in the UK and then it could be legally used throughout Europe anyway although not neccessarily possible to register in each member country in the EU.
Cheers,
Jason
