Alloy uprights

Hi all

Dick Townsend asked me to post these photos of the alloy upright use on the Gardner Douglas T70 spider.
They would be ideal for a GT40.

Chris,

Thanks for posting that info. If the granada hubs fit right on, do you know what work is involved in connecting them to the wishbones & track rod ends?

Unsprung weight on the GTD must be one of the most important areas to improve. The stock setup, especially at the rear, leaves much to be desired in the weight department!

If there was a readily available 'bolt-on' alternative I'm sure there would be plenty of customers...

Hi Julian

these uprights are designed to take 1/2" rose joints, so the GTD wishbones would require mods.
I think that I may have the price wrong Dick tells me he was quoted around £460 for the set, will check this out with Dick on Monday

Regards

Chris

Julian, Spencer Marsh of GTD emailed me a little while ago advising me that the factory could supply Ali uprights for my GTD if I wanted to change over. I requested further information regarding if they were a straight bolt on modification and what the price was for a complete kit. When he responds I will let you know what GTD has to offer. Brian

Guys,

I have seen the term rose joint a number of times, but not in a place where I could ask about its meaning. Is a rose joint the same as a rod end or a Heim joint?

Thank you for furthering my education!

Great question Mike! I have always assumed it to be the case that they all refered to the same piece, but it always bugged me that I didn't know for sure.

Looking forward to the clarification also!!

Hi all

the price on these uprights is
Rears £167.00 + VAT and fronts are £140+ VAT they come machined ready to take Ford Granarda Scorpio bearings and hubs.
This would reduce the unsprung weight on the standard GTD setup.
Regards
Chris

Yup - I think that "rose joint" is the British generic term for a Heim (brand name) joint. Is there a "Rose" company in the UK?

We call 'em rod ends in the US.

The only thing that separates the English from the Americans is the English Language!
Rose joint = Rod end = Heim joint.

Correct me if I'm wrong (I hope so!) but any ally upright available means changing to Rose jointed suspension. Altho this has it's advantages, the disadvantages are cost (£alot) & V. harsh ride quality.

I understand the production GTD uprights are ally.... anyone got any info on these?

Or are there other ways of reducing un-sprung weight?? Lighter wheels & drill lots of big holes in the steel uprights??

Hi Julian

its best to have a rose joint (rod end)at the upright (for adjustment), then a rubber or polyurethane bush for attachment at the chassis end (for vibration).
Rally Design have P.T.F.E. lined rose joints 1/2" bore 5/8" thread for £14.50 each. They have a SWL of 12807 lbs. Tel 01795 531871.

Chris,
Are there any corresponding parts to the Ford Scorpio hubs/brgs in the US? Or would you have to locate/ship those parts also?

Also what brand/type are the brakes in the picture and where are they available? Is the rotor 12"/300mm dia?

When you guys say (pound)460.00 for the set I assume that means all 4 and bare, no hubs/brgs as pictured?

You must have a special British keyboard, mine doesn't have that pound symbol.
Your pics are high quality and high volumn. Is this your career or just an "all your spare time" endeavor? ;> )

Hi Chris,

Thanks for the idea, I can see how that set-up would work. But shirley due to the time invloved in modifying the stock wishbones, it would probably be more straightforward simply to manufacture new wishbones, hence the cost issue?

I guess I'm looking for a bolt-on solution, that simply doesn't exist!!

Julian
you would have to drill alot of holes and big ones to make the GTD uprights light
best regards Dick

Hi Dick
Those look like John Wisher uprights, I have the same uprights fitted to the rear of my car. I think that they are also the upright used on the RF GT40!!!

Chris.
PS any info on the price of the GD uprights?
