Heres the thing, I don’t know a whole lot about turbo cars and even less about Porches.

I was thinking of trying one of these fancy electronic boost controllers that you can program curves into, but im not sure it will work with this car. Is there anything about the Porsche that would prevent one of these systems from working? Does it already have some sort of waste-gate management system that i would have to work around? Since this car has twin turbos, will the tubing from the boost controller solenoid to the wastegates be too long?

Looks like this kit added external wastegates (though, i don’t know if Porsche uses the external type from the factory), other than that, i don’t think theres much difference to how the system functions.

I'll offer what I know. Most of my turbo experience comes from SVO's, Turbo Coupes, etc., not Porsches, but they're all pretty much the same. IN order to place a boost controller, you need to find the way the sytem is set up to actuate the wastegates. Most of the time there's a small diameter hose that runs from the compressor side of the turbo (cold side, made of aluminum) to the wastegate. That's where you put the boost controller, inline with that tube. Most of the time, there's a hose that comes with the kit that looks like a "Y" and the tubes will be labled as to where they attach to the system.

Now, knowing Porsche engineers and how the aftermarket companies tune these cars, I'd bet they put a heavy spring in that wastegate. If that's the case my friend, the boost controller isn't going to help the situation. The boost controllers are used to kinda cheat the wastegate to give you MORE boost. You can't use them to give you less than stock boost. What he needs to do is find out who the manufacturer of the wastegate is and order a lighter pressure spring kit for it. That will lower the boost pressure that the wastegate opens, then install your boost controller and use that to turn it up.

What a boost controller does is it bypasses some of the air going to the wastegate so it's not seeing all the boost the turbo is making. Thus you're tricking the wastegate to think it's seeing 14 lbs when it's really making about 20+ lbs of boost.

I haven't taken a look at the car yet since its in storage for the winter. But, I'm pretty sure it has external wastegates. Im guessing that your second picture that you tired to post was a picture of this (its not showing here). I'm no newbie when it comes to these things, I understand all the basics of a turbo system like any car guy should, I just dont have any experience with turbo systems nor do i have experience with Porsche... I'm just wondering if theres anything different with porsches that i should be aware of. The spring in the wastegate is somthing i didnt know, I will have to take a look into that.

John, I used to spend a lot of time on renlist.com. They have a lot of experts that could help you with this. From what little that I know, the spring that Brian mentioned is the key to Porche turbos other than resizing the turbos themselves.

Yeah, that's what I'm thinking they did. The spring pressure is what keeps the wastegate closed and it'll start to open once the boost pressure overrides the spring pressure. It's mechanical and therefore isn't really adjustable. You're going to need to get a lighter spring kit and then install the boost controller to return it back to the way it was with the higher boost. That's my suggestion.

Since your friend has big bucks wrapped up in his EVO modded 996 twin-turbo, it seems to me that EVO should have something to prevent too much boost when the engine is cold. Bringing someone else onboard at this point is likely to cause finger-pointing issues when something bad happens...
