Audi 016 5N versus AFC

Sorry guys - I tried sneaking this in as part of another Audi thread, but later on today I searched and could not find the message I wrote while looking for replies (I neglected to see which message subject it was under).

Anyway, I found both a 5N and an AFC (from the Audi 5000 turbo) but not sure of all the differences between the two. Is it simply just the R/P ratio or is there something else I'm missing? Since I have the choice, I might go for the AFC because it has a SLIGHTLY taller R/P. Thanks....

Hi Chris, here are the gears from what was previously posted on this forum.
,,,,,,AFC,,,5N
1st 3.60 3.60
2nd 1.94 2.13
3rd 1.23 1.36
4th 0.90 0.97
5th 0.72 0.73
RP 3.89 RP 4.11

Thanks - I already had the ratios which is why I didn't do a search for ratios but according to your info, they are different. The salvage yard told me the ratios are the same and other info I have found on the net say they are the same. The only difference up until your post that I could find is the R/P which matches the info you gave me.

I was wondering about other info as well though - particularly, if someone has a 5N in their car now and wanted to drop in an AFC, are there any physical differences? Does the AFC have a LSD (since it's in the turbo I figured I'd ask). I tried doing Google searches and can't come up with that kind of info. Maybe that's because there are no other differences besides ratios?

Thanks for the help.

Chris,

I bought an AFC a couple of months ago and it does not come with a LSD (mine didn't anyway). As far as I know, there are no external differences between the 5N and AFC, only the ratios.

Same case, just the different ratios. It is the best box (gearing) that you can get in the US for V8 application. The only one better is the 3U 016 in Europe.Unless someone added it after it left the factory you wont find a LSD in one.
