audi 016 final drive conversion

me again, with a lack of knowledge & a willingness to learn.....!
i can only imagine that it's either a non-starter, physically impossible, expensive or totally rediculous, but has anyone successfully changed the final drive on an audi 016 5 speed gearbox?

i know that gear ratio conversions are possible in changing physical gears, or changing crown wheels & pinions, but surely a final drive conversion would also change / improve all the gears in the box? just wondering - as always.

cheers.

Yes, it is possible, if that is what you'r asking. And a final drive, is a crown wheel and pinion. The combination of the final drive ratio and a slected gear ratio, would give you an overall effective ratio in that particular gear. Your asking if you can change the final ratio, from EX. 3.22 to say 4.11 for better acceleration or torque value? Yes it is possible, and I belive this has been discussed before, try the search option, if you haven't already. Feel free to post back with the your results, or ask any other questions if you didn't find what you are looking for.

Also of note, I believe some years back there was disscussion of using a 944 diff and final drive set, but the knowledge escapes me. It has been some time since I have been with the info, and I would have to check my notes on the subject. Some members were trying to get a larger diff in there, and a bigger stronger final drive set. Some of the 944 box's, are closely related to the 016 Audi.

Some other members knowledge with 016's would also be of use, feel free to chime in gents with your experiences.

Good luck

Here is the cost for the replacement gears from Albins, quoted yesterday:

"Cost for an Audi 016 3.22 Ring and Pinion set is – AUD$2600 (USD$2160.60 – at the current exchange rate)

Shipping and handling will be – AUD$125 (USD$104 – at the current exchange rate)"

Then you need to install it.

These prices are fairly typical from what I have seen.

thanks kym,
at last, i have found someone who had the same problem. it has taken me almost a year & now there's light. i have an audi 016 petrol 5 speed box (3.89 final drive) onto a 302 windsor delivering around 350 bhp. goes like a rocket but reaches around 150km/h at 5500rpm in 5th, looking for gears.......& first gear is also useless.
i currently have two options, (1) to go for the 6 speed diesel option - affordable but will have to save, or (2) changing final drive - which you seem to have achieved. would love to go there, but that seems expensive.

please pass me any more info or details available, as i need to look at all the options.
thanks man.
cheers.

As I recall, the 3.22 R&P discussion started with an offering from German Transaxles of America a few years back. At that time GTA would only sell the gear set installed because it required modification of the transaxle housing. Is this the case with the set from Albins?

Prices for Porsche boxes are getting to the point where this option is becoming more practical.

Yup, that was it. I knew there were a couple options and some previous threads on the subject. Thanks gents for getting on this and steering him right.

Take care fellows.

I missed my chance about a year ago. The exchange rate was more favorable and I could have got the gear set for about $1000 US. In hind site I should have bought a few and resold them when the exchange rate was less favorable.

Joe,

All that is required to install the 3.22 or the 2.92 ratios is a disassembly and reassembly of the gearbox (preferably adding the strengthening plate in the process). This obviously needs to be done by a gearbox specialist. No modifications to the transaxle housing are required.

I considered going to a 6-speed box (01E) but found that, for the boxes I looked at, the first gear was virtually useless; so only five effective gears anyway. Also the cost of switching from a 016 to a 01E is expensive because, as well as the new box, all the other stuff needs to be bought: LSD, mounting, adaptor plate, flywheel, clutch bits, gear linkage, drive shafts, etc. All much more expensive (at least here in Australia) than getting a new crown wheel and pinion.

you're absolutely right kym,

with the current state of the global economy i guess it'll just be best to see it out for the next couple of months. one actually needs to be very calculated about this, but it's good to hear about your success with the convesrion, thought i was the only one.....cheers, & good uck to the ausies against the bokke today!

cheers.

It's more involved that that, you need to set the proper pinion depth and backlash, which requires some skill and tooling.
