Audi transaxle R&P questions

Hello,

I´ve been searching the net for information on the Audi 016 (in Germany known as the typ 44 or AAV).So far this is the best source I found with a lot of information. There´s more here than in any German forum on the matter! The thread that interests me in particular is the article by Pete Tinucci http://www.gt40s.com/forum/how-engi...les-audi-016-083-transaxles-pete-tinucci.html.
He mentioned that the G31 shares a lot of parts with the Porsche 915.My question is can the ring and pinion from the 915 be used in the Audi 016? I realize that it would spin backwards, that´s what I want because I´m building a rear engine/rear wheel drive car and the G50 costs too much.915 parts are fairly reasonable here although a complete unit goes for about 4000 dollars on ebay..
As far as I know the 924/944 and Audi 100/200(european model of the 5000) are the same transaxle with only difference being the gear ratios?

Thanks for your help!
Greetings from Germany
Mark

Hi Mark,

You cannot use a 915 R & P in an 016. They are completely different in design and size. The 016 is a hypoid and the 915/G31 is a spiral bevel.

The 016's are the same except for ratios and a few parts for the 944 turbo. Also the input shafts for the Porsche 016 does not have a pilot bearing diameter machined on the end of the shaft.

The 944 turbo has a larger ring gear and a larger front pinion bearing.

There is a ring and pinion that may be able to be modified to work on in the 016. It is a 3.44 and it came in the 1976-77.5 924's. It was a 4 speed and what would be necessary to use this would be to add a piece to the end of the pinion shaft for 5th gear. I have been trying to locate one of these transaxles to get a ring and pinion to try this on. My thoughts were to machine down the end of a 944 pinion then bore a hole in the 924 pinion shaft and turn threads on the stub and in the hole. Then screw the pieces together.

I've been told that this R & P is still available but it is relitavely expensive to use as a ginny pig.

Hi Pete,
Thanks for quick reply! I have a good source on 924/944 parts here in Germany and his prices are reasonable. If you have the part number or code I can see if I can get a couple of those R&Ps,meanwhile I´ll look in my PET and see if it´s in there are also.I would be willing to send one or two to you free of charge so you can experiment. If it works, maybe you could modify one for me in exchange? The 016 and the 944 trans are cheap here and there are still a lot of them available.I picked my 016 up for 50 bucks.
I´m building 2 engines for my bug (although a GT40 is my dream, maybe someday..)one is a 2 liter type 4 turbo boxer that will have around 400HP and the other is a 2876cc type 4 turbo boxer with around 600HP.The 2 liter is the ginny pig for my motor management.Using a G50 I would have to cut half of the pan off and build a subframe.Things like that are hard to get through the tech. inspection here in Germany.

Thanks
Mark
