Banner Advertisements

Well, as you can probably tell we’ve got advertising banners up and running. From the few comments I’ve received it appears that folks don’t think they are obtrusive and that is a good thing. It will not slow your connection up at all either – they are all under 25k and once cached in your browser they don’t get loaded again from the server. By contrast pictures are around 100k and text for a long thread is well over 75k. Therefore, it should not affect your loading speed.

So far we have a few advertisers:

http://www.race-car-replicas.com/ - Our own Fran Hall’s creations

http://www.roaringforties.com.au/ - Robert Logan’s GT40s

www.verycoolparts.com – Nice injection systems and other bits

http://www.keithcraft.com/ - Engines, and good ones too

http://www.aclift.com/ - Garage lifts, nice stuff

www.vintagewheelsus.com – Nice wheels for your 40

I know that Brad Davies at American Custom Lifts indicates he will give a discount for forum members if you mention that you saw the ad on www.gt40s.com. I think some of the others might too, so if you are in need of some of these products then please give them a call. We’ve got some more coming on board too that are offering products that fit our needs and I am pushing them to offer discounted services to our community.

The revenue for the adverts will clearly be used for the forum to pay for time, server services, and software. It took quite a bit of work to get the advertising engine running, but it appears to be doing its job without causing any problems with other services like picture hosting etc. The only “negative” thing is that there is a banner forum located at the bottom that is closed to everyone but admins and it is visible, sort of an eye sore.

Hope that this isn’t as bad as some people thought it might be, and better than what some envisioned.

Best,
Ron

Hi Ron,
I think it's a good thing. The forum is now starting to support itself and that means it will be here alot longer.
Those ads are very nicely done and blend well on the screen with no flashy distractions.

Excellent job Ron! I, for one, don't know when you find the time to keep this site running AND make continual improvement - But I do appreciate all of your efforts.

THANK YOU

Beautiful job Ron /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif

I have to admit, I for one was against the ads siting the Cobra website as an example of what it could tun into /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif But your subtle and yet effective format is well done.

Fine with me too..........but where are they???? If they are this hard to find, I cant see anyone complaining.

Thanks for the thumbs up on the adverts. I also feel they are not too flashy, but very visible and useful for the advertisers and members alike.

Some older browsers will not display them correctly or at all, but anything XP based will be just fine. Incidentally, those older browsers also will have some trouble with some of my other planned features that are coming, but they aren't mission critical to reading the board.

I was very surpised at the amount of support for the adverts. I really like it that we've got some general equipment on board as well as GT40 specific things. I was also suprised that some GT40 related companies don't care to advertise here, I suppose they get the exposure for free by being here so there is no need to advertise. But, all in all we'll have decent income with just a few advertisers and that is fine.

We've got a few more that are coming on here in the next week or so. Remember, most of the companies will offer some sort of discount if you mention where you saw the ad so ask them before you buy, I think it'll work in favor for all of us.

Actually Ron, XP, with Norton, can be configured to not see the adverts also.

This way, everybody is happy

I don't see them,,,,,,,,,are they on the top of the page?
I have no idea how to set my computor to "see" or "not see" ads.
......good thing I have a 14 year old kid in the house, who can set this stuff up for me.

Policy questions

I think they look great and I support the idea, Ron, with one caveat. I've seen other boards where if anything negative was posted about one of their advertisers, then the post would be edited or deleted and often the user would be banned. Now while I don't anticipate any lies or slander against any of the advertisers here, I would also hope that their presence doesn't result in open and honest disclosure of how they conduct their business, both good and bad.

Have you formulated a policy on this?

Re: Policy questions

Ron, Can I have my money back, now. I don't want the "star" no more /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

You are doing a great job.

Re: Policy questions

I think it is a great idea to have the adverts myself. Ron has done a great job of implementing them so they are not as flashy and anoying as those on the Cobra sites. They have their visibility but aren't intrusive. I'm running the old Windows 98SE and they display fine.

Re: Policy questions

Mark,

that is a good point. I too visit boards where posts about vendors are taken down if they are negative, or at least neturalized.

I will not do that. If you decide XYZ vendor wronged you or their part is a POS, and can prove it, then it needs to be posted openly. we can't have lies and slander here, but the open policy is the best.

I think that has been seen numerous times here, most reacently with MDA. A customer complained, made some points, but MDA was able to post here and in the end I think things were sorted out.I was asked to close that thread at one time but refused - I felt the open nature of the board would play out correctly and in the end it did. I think the MDA owner is now happy and MDA is in good standing with the customers and potential customers.

I plan to continue using the same policy unless someone can come up with a good reason not to. Vendors/advertisers will not get different treatment from anyone else.

Ron

Re: Policy questions

I am fine with the adverts as well. I really apreciate your stance on freedom to post issues if they are valid. No one likes to hear or see dirty laundry, but if it is substantiated it helps others make an informed choice.

Well done Ron.

Re: Policy questions

We have a new advertiser that should be welcome to those looking for Ford parts.

Five Star Ford, located in AZ, has placed an advertisement with us and they sell Ford parts and Ford racing parts. They are offering discounts of 25-50% off of Ford parts and are trying to work up a discount on Ford Racing Parts, which would include complete engines, heads, short blocks, long blocks etc. The man to talk to is:

Max Zuckerberg
Five Star Ford
Parts Specialist
Direct 1-800-866-1520 ext 236
Fax 1-480-949-8478
[email protected]

They will ship overseas, have done it before, and have no problem working with folks on the forum.

Re: Policy questions

Ron,
Perhaps you could provide a member ID for those that have contributed to the forum and they would be eligible for discounts. It would encourage more participation and let the vendors know the more serious enthusiasts.
Just a thought.

There are already membership numbers in place if that is what you mean. You are #777 I am #256. The Prisoner was #6. 'I am not a number, I am a free man' (TV joke)

Man, that was a freaky show, I was a kid when I saw it for the first time. "WHO is number ONE?" /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif and that funky ass bicycle /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif
