Bellhousing to chassis clearance

Hi,

I have just fitted my gearbox and engine assembly in to the car and found that the bellhousing is touching the chassis before the tail of the gearbox is low enough to bolt to the mounting brackets. I know i will need to remove some material from the underside of the bellhousing to get the assembly to fit but my question is to all the guys (and girls?) that have working cars is....

How much space is there between the bellhousing and the box section of the chassis?

Cheers,
Chris

It's a tornado chassis with a Renault UN1 box and a cast bellhousing from Chris Cole. If someone has that combination of parts and they can answer that would be great but really I want to know how much deflection I should expect in the short mustang engine mounts because the last thing I want is the bellhousing to hit the chassis when I rev the engine hard!

All help appreciated,
Chris

Hi Chris,
You should be looking for at least 0.5” static clearance. I’ve the same bell-housing in the same chassis, but I did lower my engine/trans assembly when I changed it from a Rover to a 302. This included a new cross-member you’ve got the issue with.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com<img src=" /><o:p></o:p>
Also be prepared to do a lot of serious fettling to get things to fit, especially to clear the flywheel and the nose of the starter-motor. <o:p></o:p>
Regards,<o:p></o:p>

Problem solved! Schoolboy error I'm afraid! I had a set of short mustang engine mounts on, now I've swapped to the tall ones everything fits. I have half an inch of clearance between the bellhousing and the frame now.

Thanks for that Andy
