Cad Drawings and open frame design

Here's the 2D dwg that I created to produce the 3D design for the chassis I intend to build.

Here's my 2 cents.

"jpkuehne - to my mind push/pull rod type suspension is not used not to just lighten unsprungs which is very important in itself."

Beg to differ. You have actually increased unsprung weight. You have added the pushrods and the bellcrank to the equation. The all the mass that moves is reacted by the spring.

Just been rummaging through my files & found this on a CD containing chassis drgs I did many years ago. This was done in AutoCAD which although not a true parametric 3D package does help with visualisation. My latest attempt is in Inventor & I'll post this once complete.

I am new to this site , and thinking about a scratch built gt-40. Just finished a scratch cobra( classic body, fe big block.) I was thinking the mustang II front and thunderbird rear also. Wanted to know if you got anywhere on chassis design , and where is the best place to purchase a body. Can you give me a ballpark figure on what a body will cost?

Has anyone found any big dimension errors on the Brian Wolff plans. I too am using them as a bassis for my plans, and any info would be appreciated. Also, does anyone know if original body measurements will fit this frame?
Thanks Steve;

Steve, I would double check anything and everything Brian Wolf has done. I've had some dealings with him. A long story! A total wast of time! Email me if you like at; datonabill at msn dot com

Drop me an email if you need to confirm any specific dimensions.

hi, my name is david from melbourne australia.

first timer, I have bean building cars for most of my life, and i would love to build the mono chassis of the gt40.
i payed for some jigs a few years ago but didint get all the items i needed to build the chassis.
i finaly got a mould this week, so its time to start all over again.
all i know its a mk1 body.

listed are some drawing i did years ago.

anyone how wants to exchange ideas and drawings please contact me on venom_00427 at hotmail.com.

i will be building the first one in rhs, but the next one i would love to build it in sheet form.

starting this week. i hope?

thanks for the site. will try it out against my drawings. should be close.
http://www.webguy.ca/downloads/kitcarplans/kitplans.php.

this site gives you the way to make the buck and the chassis.

if its drawn in cad, and you have the basic demensions, you could scale the drawing to suit?

big week ahead.

thanks again.

great site.

regards

Hello everybody.

I am working with a gt40 chassis and design in Solidworks. But now I need a body shell of a gt40 mk1 to get forder in the design to check that every pipe is inside the body.
<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com<img src=" /><o:p></o:p>
Have any one access to a 3D body shell or do anyone now where I can find one for free! :) I found few page on internet but the cheapest are about 70$, and then I not sure if it works in Solidworks…

Hello everybody..
I have a question for you if you don't mind..
I'm just starting of building a space frame from drawings supplied by Mike Osborne, have you heard of these drawings??
The drawings have no exact measurements for the exact suspention mounting positions, my question is do i weld up all the suspention so it works correctly and then fit the body around the wheels or do i fit the body and then weld up the suspention mounting points so the wheels are located correctly iside the wheel arches, obivously making sure all geometry etc is correct.
If you could help me i would be very grateful!
Thanks

Hey all,
This is a great idea. From similar projects in past it might be good to start with physical dimensions of wheelbase, body width etc. Depending who parts are purchased from there will be different measurements so these variables could be left out for the moment ie. roll bars. Another aspect is not to get to carried away with triangulating the chassis until we know its a basic usaable structure. ie why triangulate Brian wolfs plans before making sure you have suspion to fit the thing. This in my opinion should be finalised later on after engine/trans/suspension/basic body dimensions and wheel base are all achieved. One these elements are finished the bracing can be added as the builder sees fit.

I think the best way to start this would be take a builder from this site who has a chassis that the majority agree is well designed, not difficult to build and has possibly already suspension parts etc available. Have the builder measure out important sections put it into cad and then distribute this for people to modify and improve. If we don't copy exactly their chassis just some key sectors we are not infringing on any copyrights.
This is not a new practice. Take the Lamborghini community and the replica builders. Some of the chassis i have seen almost replicate the original and were designed from a few basic dimensions and some photos. Some have actually gone to the effort to measure main structure, suspension pick up points and the basic suspension then released it as plans or a kit.

Also as far as creating the worlds strongest chassis is concerned i think its jumping the gun and not that necessary to most of us. I'm from Australia where our ADR's are very tight yet have a look at the roaring forties image:

http://www.roaringforties.com.au/gallery/images/gallery25_big.jpg
http://www.roaringforties.com.au/gallery/gallery.html

It's simple, strong, has the area to be flexible for changes and has already proven itself. I think this should be the initial aim.
Have a look at the locost, it was one just a 20 pound book with plans and now the community has evolved immensely.

Now the question is, who can provide all the necessary measurements?

Hi to all,

my name ist Christian I`am from Germany.
My compliments to all of you and to this forum also!
I had never seen such a professional site for the GT40!:shy:

A few years ago my father builds our Ford GT40 MK1 in our Garage
based on an Hermsen Raceframe and body.

And now we decided to do a new one for me, but I won`t will buy an Kit,
I will start to build it on my own hands, I working with cars for 10 years now and have good contacts for cutting and welding the frame. I have experiences in AUTO CAD 2000 and Inventor.

Now Iàm searching for Frame Plans in dxf for download at the web-
so we don`t have to start this projekt from point zero..

Can anyone of you help me ?

It would be nice to see an positive answer

Thanks a lot for your help and answers

Best regards
Christian

Here is our first GT40, now Iàm trying to look for the new project..

So does anyone can help me with some drawings?, As we want to do it
scratchbuild from our own..

Hi CHristian

best would be to contact the ones posting the drawing pics via PM

and check the "parts for sale" of this forum, may be there is something you need.

TOM

it sound great any help you need just let me know. I work as a detailer at a fab shop, so can come up with fab drawings of you really want to build this.

Guys I think alot of you are getting ahead of yourself. While everyone is excited about chassis design there are some critical information that needs to be gathered before you even start.

A very short list is wheel base, wheel track, body shell dimensions, overall dimensions of engine and transmision, All of the overall tire dimensions, steering unit and suspension connection points (after a suspension analysis is done). Like I said that is a very very short list. You should try and draw as much of these as much as you can and then locate them in the assembly file. Then you connect the dots. A chassis is a tool to properly connect everything in package with the correct strength. The chassis doesnt come first its comes last.

You can't design something with adequate strength if you dont know all of the parameters. You will either end up with a heavy over engineered piece or a weak under engineered piece. Another issue is how do you know everything will fit.

I am not trying to discourage any of you. I actually applaud the efforts. I am just trying to make sure you dont waste your time getting ahead of yourself and then have to make changes to your design after youve welded it up, Or it disappoints you in the performance area.

If anyone has any questions I'll be more than happy to help. I too am interested in what you guys come up with. I love to see creative juices boiling.

Cents we are talking about the gt40 why don't we starts with the original specs. I know there will be parts that are out of stock like the trans but there are companies like RBT Transmissions that makes a trans. that is very sim. to the original.

Also are we going with a Mk I or Mk II for for our specs? We will also need to know what kind of changes we are going to make and how this will affect the chassis design.

I am sour we all can do this, but it will take some time and and effort.
