Can I Do This????

I want to make the sills in my RCR GT40 look like the originals. I'm going to add raised beads and a faux access panel using this from ATL

I have the cover plate and the cork gasket. I would like to drill and tap 4-6 holes to retain the panel.

Can I do this and not have to worry about fuel leaking out?

Bill.....

I recommend that you dont ......use a high grade double sided adhesive....you will amazed how strong the bond is.....or epoxy adhesive...

More holes = more chance of leaks......and your plate is purely decorative ..correct????

Bill,

If it is a faux panel. Why don't you just use epoxy and glue it done. Then cut the fasteners so they don't quite go through the panel and epoxy them into the plate to complete the look?

Just my 2 cents.

Thanks Fran and Jim. I will just epoxy the panel and cut the screws down to fit in the holes. I was just concerned that the panel might come loose

Hi Bill,

Use this (or similar from SEM etc.) and it will probably never come off - but I would still go with the 2-sided automotive tape.

I was originally going to make some faux sill panels from .050 mild steel. But the cost of purchasing the beading machine from Eastwood just wasn't in the cards. So I'm buying some 1/2" 1/2 round mild steel for $32 to see if I can make them work and appear like the real thing.
