Ford P68 F3l Long shot ;-)

Hi there,

I am desperately trying to find detailed information, drawings, plans etc for the Ford P68 F3l sports car. Planning to build a large scale model for radio control.

Its a long shot but was wondering if anyone could point me to a good source of info or may have some useful info?

All the best,

Nigel

Check the Blueprint / Drawing Sites like... Scratch made cars... VSRN online, & Blueprint Forum............ sorry if those titles are a bit off, but should get you started

Leopold is the only one that comes to mind. There was a user that went by the name F3L (Rick?) some time ago that indicated he had the lines and station templates. I've not seen him on for some time. Best of luck, it's a hell of a project!

There was a car advertised for sale some months ago, by a sales company on the south coast of the UK, this one had a GRP body; does this make it possibly the cashed one, having had the ally body replaced?

Asking price was £1 mill !!!!

No idea where it went but somebody must have had some sort of plans for that project.

Thanks to all you guys for the links and info so far, really appreciated ;-)

It looks like I will have to get to grips with a CAD package and constructing my own 3D model of the body using the available pics and 3 views - the only option at present...................going to be a long road I feel as have not done it before but its never too late to start. You reap what you sow and all that..... ;-)

I do have some 1/32 scale model bodies of the P68 but how true their scale is to the full size is difficult to say - they do look nice though! If anyone has any tips for scaling up the 1/32 body to enable construction of a good 1/4 - 1/3 scale body then please get in touch........

Any more info etc is very warmly welcomed.

All the best,

Nigel

As said before, first, try to ask Leopold, he is a really nice guy, and maybe he could help you...

If not, I would go that way:

First try to find a forum of guys making 3d mods for video games like GTR I think, you could find a 3D file available.
If not, take your 1/32 model, send it to a company which can do 3d scan, and manipulate the data to scale it as needed

A simple scan costs arround 200-300£ But you need to use a CAD program.
A cad model would allow you to make "slices" templates, and then build the shape in real.

Check the modelling section of automotiveforums, and search for a thread started by "cinqster'. He is building a porsche RS60 this way.

Good luck, and please, post here your progress.

Olivier.

Thanks Oliver - WOW!!! - some amazing modelling work there! I have taken some great tips and insperation from those sites so thanks very much for the links - I will post up some progress as soon as i get things rolling. Just need some better 3 view drawings and I can make a start...............thank goodness for the 'tinternet!

Cheers,

Nigel

I "scanned" a model myself (analog style), but would suggest you to try get a 1.18 model if you are going that route.

You can see what I did in my thread

http://www.gt40s.com/forum/lola-t70-lounge/19604-canamsa-sa-stratch-build.html

You could use a similar approach to make a 1/3 scale plug. You could probably even go straight from 1.18 measured station infomation to 1/3 station patterns without using a computor at all. In the old days computors were not an option.

If you are not CAD literate (yet) I would suggest you give this a go first, would save a lot of time.

Cheers

Hi Fred,

I just had a look over your build thread and wow that is some fabulous work! Amazing to see it taken from a small model car to the full size version with quality construction.

Thanks for your info - the only problem I have is there are no models available larger than 1/24 scale. I am however going down the 3D model route with a very steep learning curve ;-) I have the 3 views sorted albeit a little low res. There is no rush to get this built so hopefully I can get things looking as right as possible before starting the "real" model build.

I think if I had chosen a subject that had a lot more info and specs available it would be a quicker easier build but then I do like a challenge!

Hope to get some computer generated stuff together over the next week so as soon as anything interesting has been created I will post up some progress.

Good luck with your build and keep up that awesome work - it's a work of art so far and will be more than worth the mamoth efforts you have gone to...... ;-)

All the best for now,

Nigel

Nigel, a few years ago I did a Maserati A6G-CS from a 4 view drawing which was scanned and imported to CAD. When doing a wire frame for the body, none of the views were very accurate. I had to re-draw with Rino and surface it. From a baseline, I cut sections and plotted full size as well as a full sized profile to be cut from plywood and mounted to a build table representing the baseline. Lot's of work but it required very little fairing between stations using a batten.

Took the whole body buck to a fabricator to make an aluminum body, chassis was almost complete, oval tubing and all. The panel beater passed away while I was overseas, and the buck rotted away in his back yard. End of that project. I do have all of the plots for maybe later.. Right now I'm concentrating on my SL-C.

The 3D scan of 1/24 scale doesn't have to be your only data source, but it sure is a good start. You could use it as a starting point and correct it with any other data you have such as the elevations above, visual comparison to photographs, etc.

You could also do the 3D scanning yourself: DAVID 3D Scanner

If you do have a 1:24 model then you can fill the body with resin and then use a razor saw to cut it into sections and then lay each section on a scanner and digitise them. You can then scale up in cad. Although you must remember a 1mm error will be a 1" error when scaled up.
