Hello from Christchurch

Hi,

My name is Jeff and I'm a mechanical engineering student at canterbury university in christchurch, new zealand.

I don't have plans to build a GT40 just yet as i'm currently rebuilding/modifying a 105e Ford Anglia.

I'm really keen to scratch build one day however and have been starting to learn alot from books about chassis and suspension design. I'd like to begin some kind of design in the next year or so, so that once my anglia is complete i can start on my next project :)

There seems to be alot of good information on this site. I spent the best part of last night reading some of the threads and have found some pics of drawings that will be a useful starting point. I also started to embark on reading Russ' !?massive!? build thread, might take me a few evenings to get through that though...

Nice to meet you all and I look forward to sharing information with you!

Jeff

Hi Jeff, it's good to know that Christchurch is still there. I was spawned in ChCh, and my dad went to Canterbury Uni.
Welcome to the world of 40's, but be very careful before you commit to a scratch build.

Cheers

Hi Jeff,
Hope you dont let this 40 plan interfere with your studies too much:) Good to see you playin with a 105e Anglia, between those & Hillman Imps I picked up most of my sideways gravel road experience about 42 years ago, taught me more than any 'how to' book ever could or would have.

cheers

Hi Jeff,
9-10 this week end Vintage car swap meet. Maybe a few 105 Anglia that might interest you also some parts available that might suit you.
Are you modifying for racing?
LIM

Hi Lim,

I might try and make it out to the swap meet tomorrow. Will be a little pre-occupied on sunday with study and bathurst!

As for the anglia, Im trying to build it up as a fast, reasonably comfortable road car. Although i keep being tempted towards removing the rear seats and building a four link rear end and roll cage! I don't think I will go that far with it, although i will use it for the occasional track day.

In its current design spec (far from finished) it is running a 2.0 litre twin cam zetec engine from a ford mondeo. Inducted by Yamaha R1 quad carbs and possible pushed along by an Eaton M90 supercharger. A conservative guess at the power would be 200hp at the flywheel.

The gearbox is a type 9 sierra 5 speed. Diff is an LSD from an EA fairlane which has disc brakes and is yet to be shortened considerably!

Front legs are mk2 cortina which will be modified and strengthened to coil overs and I'm toying with the idea of converting it to rack and pinion steering.

Here is my build thread if anyone is interested:

Bloody hell, Jeff!

The mechanical mods will be a piece of wees compared to all that rust removal! I think I would have been beginning to wonder when it would ever end.... Full marks for stickability in what turned into a fairly major undertaking. And good to see your skills getting honed as it progressed. Not that you'll need to become skilled in removing underseal in the process of building a 40!

Well done, I'm sure you will cope with a scratchbuilt 40 no trouble. If you want to come and see my car and talk to the geriatrics that built it, that's fine.

BTW, what sort of race car does your father have?

Cheers,

Russ

Hi Russ,

Might have to take you up on the offer of coming to see your 40 in the coming future. Quite busy with uni at the moment so maybe in a few weeks time. My flatmate would be keen to see it as well, he is building a scratch built, mid engined sports car for the track.

Yeah i was getting pretty disheartened with removing all that rust, just kept finding more! I learnt alot of good skills from it though. Looking forward to doing some actual fabrication for it though.

The car dad and i have been building is a fairly serious piece of kit. Its a 95 mustang which started off as just a club car project, was going to be a 302w and 5 speed with a cage, but now...
We came across an ex-Rousch Fenway nascar running gear setup at a decent price, so now its a 600+hp nascar engine (altered for real tracks) with a 4 speed jericho gearbox, full floating hub rear end, tubular a-arms and k-member etc. Should be on the track this summer, being built up for the NZGT series. Should be a hoot!
