Hello from SE WI

I joined the group a short bit ago but do not believe I did an introduction.

My name is Bob and I am considering buying and building a GT40 in the not too distant future. I have been a car/Ford guy since as far back as I can remember. My goal has been to buy and build a GT40 for a very long time. It seems that there used to be lots of kits available (GT40 and many others) but the choices have dwindled. From what I can tell, and I surely could be wrong, RCR is one of the few or only US based kit suppliers left. It seems like they have a good rep though so that's good.

I recently retired from motorcycle racing due to injuries. Nothing too terrible, head trauma and some broken foot bones, but, I retired while I was ahead. I raced MotoAmerica Stock1000 and loved every second. I have always really been a car guy but motorcycles offered a lower barrier to entry. When racing I did all of my own modifications, motor building, FI tuning, suspension tuning, repairs, etc. I also have several cars including a 1968 Fairlane 500 with a built 289. I would say my mechanical skills are pretty advanced.

There are two areas of this project that have me concerned. The first is the transaxle. Availability and price seem to be an issue. It seems there are a lot of possibilities, though only a handful of proven solutions. The proven solutions also hit a high price tag. I would prefer a 5 or 6 speed manual, but I wouldn't be completely opposed to an advanced automatic or DCA.

My 2nd concern is paint and bodywork. I can do almost anything mechanical. Body work? It is not my specialty. Its an art and those who are good at it can command their price. From reading, I think on RCR's site, the bodies are a little rough out of the "box". I did body and paint on my race bike which turned out good but the panels were small and flaws weren't the end of the world. I would probably have to leave that all to a pro.

I have been considering changing my plan to a Shelby Daytona solely because of the transaxle issue. Body and paint would be the same either way.

My timeline for all of this is 3-5 years. Its my retirement project. I am planning to retire in about 3 years. I am trying to get my ducks in a row.

Bob
