How about a get together track event?

Sounds great, I'm in. Let me know if you need help, I know several GT-40 owners in my area and I'm sure they would all participate.

The Superformance club usually rents the south portion of VIR in the spring for a weekend. Typically about 60 cars running Saturday and Sunday. I wonder if it would be good to do it in conjuction with their event?

Their website (does not show events for 03 yet) is at: www.secondstrike.com

Jim, what sort of track skills do I have to have to drive at an event like this? My car is supposed to be completed for spring of 03, even with delays expected I could get to VIR for fall of 03. With NO current track experience, could I learn enough to go around and not endanger anyone between now and next fall? (just being honest.)

The DC area Cobra club does the VIR thing. A few area Cobra owners also have GTs. Mine better be done by spring so that would add, possibly, four more GTs from the DC area. I'm told VIR has too many turns to memorize ((ala Neurenburgring (yes I probably botched the spelling) so it's a more demanding track than most. I'd like to try VIR.

I almost forgot... The DC area Cobra club has some strange rules. Some of the laps are no passing. The other laps are "pass only in the designated areas" vis-a-vis no side-by-side who is the latest braker with the best brakes racing goes on. Good for the new guys. Kinda boring for those who want to hang it out. Other Cobra related events may have this in the rules. It makes sense for most people.

Personally I like SVRA rules. Race as you wish, fast or slow. If you hit someone you have to pay to get their car fixed too. SVRA is not into replicas but I'll bet they'd give us a class of our own if we showed up with a grid's worth of GTs (replicas or not). In fact they told me they might just look the other way if I wanted to enter my ERA in a few events.

Maybe another option for those with a heavy right foot.

It may be difficult to get a track for next season unless we hook up with another group. I'm all for it but don't expect to have my car on the road before spring 2004. I really think a 2004 event would make sense...40th anniversary of the GT40 and all. If it can happen next year I'd make it anyway.

I'm the Arizona regional Director for NASA (national auto sport asso). We have regions nation wide and have run groups for what you are talking about. I can help set it up if you like.

I think a event where everyone would feel confortable would be best. We could have different groups for those who've never been on a course to more experienced groups. We'd have instructors to help out and keep it safe. First we need a date that enough people would commit to and an idea if people would really show up.
Gordon what would you recommend and what would it cost? Personally I'd enjoy showing , seeing our cars , and meeting other Forum members. At my age I've come to realize that I never drove as fast as Mark Donohue nor is it likely that I ever will.
Best
Jim

Jim, The best way it would work is this; Contact the director of the region where the event is to be held. Tell him you want to have NASA host a special event that will incorperated within one of their schedualled events. Generally if there are more than 20 cars or so the group would have their own run group. If there isn't that many than the hosted group would be incorporated into the existing HPDE (street cars) or race groups depending on car prep and licensing. If you want you can call me at 480-446-8442 and I can explane further how this works.

Let's do it! VIR or Charlotte. Road Atlanta is an option as well (have had several Ferrari Club of America events there) as is a track in Gasden Alabama that runs motorcycles, Cobra Clubs, Porche club, SCCA and recently the AL SAAC (really!).

There is also a track in Camden SC and Roebling Road in Savannah. We had a greta group at Roebling road July 3rd this year. Some of these are Carz and/or NASA events.

We have several GT40s that will be ready (3), a Lola Can Am. several GT350s, retired NASCARs etc here.

Have done htese before and would like to do it again with this group. Could get rack instruction and divide up by speed/skill! Chip

Count me in!

Bill

will no doubt do a road trip and help with the events. I'll hit just about anything on the Atlantic coast.

I'd certainly come and maybe I'd come with a GT40, depending on how things go over the next few months. If I don't come with a 40 maybe I can come with an Atom....

My vote would be for VIR - the road course is absoultely stunning as is the location. If you have not been to this track you should visit. After that I'd say Road Atlanta, Charolette last.

Lynn's car should be done by then by the look of things and he is close so I'd imagine he'd come as well.

Will be there with car and wife. ANy location.

Don't forget the SAAC in Nashville May 2003! cb

There will be a get-together of sorts at Laguna Seca the weekend of August 15-17 (the Monterey Historic Races). However, they're only going to let the real cars on the track. Jim, if you haven't already looked into it, you should see if you can enter J6... I will be starting a separate thread for this event once my plans start to firm up.

Somewhat in conjunction with that, I see that NASA is planning to run at the brand new track in Fernley, NV (just east of Reno) the weekend of August 9-10. That might be an option for those of us out west.

I'm curious why nobody has mentioned Lime Rock or Mid-Ohio as a possible location - was it just a matter of trying to find a track that was centrally located for the folks on the east coast?

J6 before I owned her was raced at Monteray and I'm sure would be welcome back.
I don't race anymore. When I do Goodwood I do it as a demo/untimed run. The first time I was there I followed Jim Hall up the hill in the sucker Chaparrel. They send the cars up in 30 second intervals. Before I left his mechanic Troy came up to me. "Hall is going to go slow. He saw your run yesterday and is afraid you're going to come up on him so watch out." That Jim Hall was worried about me catching him was enough for me. I figured it was time to slow down myself...
The next event the Shelby Club has at Lime Rock (Probably 2004) might be the time to try and get together. They allow all of our cars and it's a great event.

I sure wish that you guys would consider
a location more centralized, like Topeka. One of the best facilities around. It would also encourage more west coasters to try and make the event. Don't take it wrong, I
luv the East coast but 2400 miles is quite far to go. Make it half of that and I'm there.
I'm sure Alain V. who lives near Topeka can tell you a lot about that track as he has competed there many times. Besides it might give him a big boost to get that GT
done when he gets it.

If this is done right and at the right place it could turn out to be the GT40's big event every year. I do know that I would certainly make an effort to be there every year.
