interesting odds

The odds of winning the Florida lottery are 1 in 22,957,480.

The odds of winning the Powerball is 1 in 175,223,510.

The odds of winning Mega Millions is 1 in 258,890,850.

The odds of a disk drive failing in any given month are roughly one in 36.

The odds of two different drives failing in the same month are roughly one in 36 squared, or 1 in about 1,300.

The odds of three drives failing in the same month is 36 cubed or 1 in 46,656.

The odds of seven different drives failing in the same month (like what happened at the IRS when they received a letter asking about emails targeting conservative and pro Israeli groups) is 37 to the 7th power = 1 in 78,664,164,096. (that's over 78 Billion) In other words, the odds are greater that you will win the Florida Lottery 342 times than having those seven IRS hard drives crashing in the same month.

I'm from the other side of the World, so have no idea what you are talking about. I assume the IRS is the tax dept, but what is the cover up?

The IRS was looking into tax exempt organization applications from conservative groups in a very discriminatory way. The head of the IRS Exempt team was Lois Lerner. She was called before Congress to testify. She invoked the 5th amendment (I decline to answer on the grounds that it may incriminate me). Congress subpoenaed her IRS emails, the IRS just recently said that the hard drives (7 hard drives containing the emails) all conveniently crashed. I am over simplifying it, but that's the short version.

'Not only did they supposedly "crash", but they were subsequently "destroyed in the normal process" as well! And not only LERNER'S 'drives "crashed"! Something like six other key IRS folks' 'drives "crashed" too! And all this happened about 10 days after the IRS was sent a letter by a member of the House Ways and Means Committee inquiring about a report that the IRS had been conducting an unusually large number of audits of conservative groups and taxpayers who donated money to them!!!

And NOW we've learned that Lerner & co had been communicating 'off the books' (so to speak) via an unmonitored system in addition to official emails!

H-E-L-L-O?! 'Anyone smell anything rotten going on here?

If anyone wants to review the whole timeline up to a few days ago it's pretty well covered here:

Thanks guys, seems like something stinks. Whenever someone trots out the fifth amendment my immediate reaction is Aha guilty!
Data from a hard drive that has crashed can normally be recovered. Interesting that these hard drives were destroyed in the process. No process that I know of destroys a hard drive until after data is recovered.
I would also guess that the IRS would back up hard drives on a regular basis. What happened to the back up discs?

There was a company hired by the IRS to backup the information. Their services were terminated. Of course this took place prior to the last BO election. "The first time I heard of this (the IRS wrong doing) was the same way you did, on the news" Sure BO!
