Is that a kit car?

Gentlemen and Lady, (I've only ever seen one on this forum)
I took my CAV to its first big local show this past weekend where the weather, while breezy and dusty, brought out a pretty good crowd. I believe my CAV is the only GT40 in this general area so it attracted a huge amount of attention. I felt like I'd just won Lemans based on the number of people who surrounded the car as I parked and given the crowds that gathered around it most of the night it was the most popular car in attendance. (although the judges awarded it nothing...oh well) My question and reason for this thread is what are the responses used to the question: IS THAT A KIT CAR? This question has been addressed in the thread "authenticity" but I wanted to see how SPF, Tornado, CAV, RCR, RF and others respond. To me "KIT CAR" demeans the status of the car but truth be told the CAV is sold as a kit....so...one response has to be YES. My offering to the question....you tell me. And yours....

My response has been -

No it is not a Kit Car.

It is a component car that I am assembling to replicate an original - a "Kit Car" is a car that utilizes a Donor car in most cases. You see there are no Ford Mustang, VW Beetle or Pontiac Fiero parts on this car.

That's a perpetual discussion on Club Cobra, you might look into some of their responses. Sometimes the question is " Is that real ", some, I have seen post,respond with "Can you toch it??, Must be real". I know that avoids the premise of the question, but much like Cobras, few no anything about the real ones except those that have a long standing interest. To most of those that ask, you could tell them anything.

This is a toughie, there is no point in feeling bad because someone who has no clue what you have is asking nicely what it is.

I know that usually all they kind of want to know is "is this the same as the cars that used to race in the 60's...." which is a reasonable question.

I usually smile and so "not a kit but not an original either!"

My response to "is it real" is a simple "yes" or "of course." To "is it a kit car" my reply "No it was built by the factory." As my car was a turn key that is the truth.
I also like Big Foot's reply.
Also to the inevitable "how much did it cost" I reply "to me priceless," "what are you prepared to offer?"

 

My response has always been this;

“The car is 100% FAKE (with a big grin),,BUT,the engine an transmission are REAL”.

When I had my fake Cobra it had a 428 with Top Loader,,,
GT has a stroked 302/Webbers and UN1.

By the time the guy begins to digest what you just told him,,,you can add,,,, it has much more power than the originals ever did. Most of the guys asking he question are curious about one thing POWER. They know nothing about chassis, body, suspension of the originals.

Having said all of the above,,,,THEY ARE ALL KIT CARS, Fiero/VW Based, Factory made, Badged by Stuperformance,,,,etc. The only difference is some are outstanding and some are not. Lotus 7 is a Kit Car,,does that make it bad?! IMHO, if you try to weasel out of the “Kit CAR name”, you will empower the dumbass.

I have lot of respect for FranSISCO Hall. The name of his business is RACE CAR REPLICAS.
