Low Tech Rear Caliper With Integrated Handbrake

If anyone is looking for a low-tech rear caliper with integrated handbrake suitable for a variety of kit/replica cars such as a GT40, the rear calipers off of a porsche 914 or 914/6 are nice basic Ate units with a very slick and effective mechanical handbrake built right into the caliper. This is the same rear caliper that's on a f-car 308.

The 914 caliper has 34mm pistons I believe whereas the 914/6 has 38mm pistons. Other than that, they are the same. The f-car 308 version is the same as the 914/6 version except the bleed nipples are located differently IIRC.

The big advantage is that there's no need for discs/hubs which can accommodate hand brake shoes. This configuration eliminates the annoying process of constantly adjusting the shoes. There is some initial setting of clearances with the porsche/f-car calipers but this is easily done.

There's a rebuild thread here showing a schematic and various pics: Rear Caliper Rebuild, Ferrari 308

These guys do a nice job of rebuilding them for a reasonable price: http://www.pmbperformance.com/catalog/item/4741552/4786404.htm NTDWM.

Hope this might be helpful to someone.

We use a Camaro/Corvette caliper with the same function which fits on an .810" thick rotor. PBR design, steel bridge with aluminum floating caliper.
