Ok, I'll admit I'm the dumbest guy in the room. I don't understand why a vintage commercial would elicit a response from anybody in this day and time.

It was a well intended dramatic spoof that draws attention to the great divide that exists over gun control, and hopefully evoked some smiles or laughter from readers/viewers. Robert

Smile and nostalgia of a lost time for me! I actually had a "Quickshooter hat"
when it was popular, and I was very much younger. What a classic.

Cogito, ergo armatum sum (I think, therefore I am armed)

Jack, you played the nostalgia card: YES!

[First Man:] I think, I think I am, therefore I am, I think.

{NOTE: This section written 45-years prior to today's spying controversy!}

[Establishment:] Of course you are my bright little star,
I've miles
And miles
Of files
Pretty files of your forefather's fruit
And now to suit our
Great computer,
You're magnetic ink.

[First Man:] I'm more than that, I know I am, at least, I think I must be.

[Inner Man:] There you go man, keep as cool as you can.
Face piles
And piles
Of trials
With smiles.
It riles them to believe
That you perceive
The web they weave
And keep on thinking free.

I remember that ad...an' ole Roy, too! (Hopalong Cassidy, Gene Autry, The Lone Ranger, The Cisco Kid, Red Rider, and host of others as well!)

NO WAY could that ad be shown today!!!!!!!!! OMG! The "p.c.", anti-gun, anti-2nd amendment, "gun-free school zone", 'guns-are-baaaad' kooks would be SUING THE SOCKS off of the manufacturer, the distributor, and the networks who show it! All the lefty "talking heads" would be having mental breakdowns on their t.v. shows, too!

I still have my Roy Rogers guns/gun belt set...complete with the wooden bullets around the belt.

'Good times...

Not to mention today a cop would blow some kid away if saw that hat in action. Must have been a way different time.

That's when a parent could send a kid out to play without a toy and the kid would find something to play with till it was time to eat. Kids today would call a lawyer and sue the parents.

You have NO idea just how "different" (as in how much BETTER) things were back then, Mesa.

No teachers were thrown out of windows or shot (just SASSING a teacher was NOT tolerated even a little bit), no "drive-bys", no "p.c.", no drug culture, no 'entitlement' mentality, moms stayed home to raise the kids, dad was the sole bread winner, no epidemic of unwed mothers, divorce wasn't common place, "GAY" meant happy, "pot" was something we cooked in, "grass" was something we mowed, "Coke" was a soft drink, t.v. and movies were all "G" rated, lawsuits were not the joke they are today, one always knew where his car keys were 'cause they were left in the ignition, few people ever locked themselves out of their houses because they weren't locked in the 1st place, probably half the taxes we pay today didn't even exist back then, prayer was no big deal no matter where 'twas done, every town had a town CHRISTMAS tree and CHRISTMAS decorations as did all public schools and many public buildings, doctors made house calls, when a kid brought a gun to school (and we DID) it was for "show and tell"...I mean, the list is almost endless. Nobody would have even thought about hijacking an airliner or crashing it into a building for any reason, nobody ever even thought about being a suicide bomber, a $17 trillion nat'l debt was unthinkable, no passport was needed to enter Canada, mass shootings were unheard of, gangs didn't rule the streets...well, you should have the picture at this point.

(I'm quite sure someone 1/2 my age [or so] will now tell me/us that most of what I just stated isn't really the way it was...that I'm remembering everyting through 'rose colored memory cells'. Right. And the Pope is Jewish. All the above accurately describes 'the way it was' when/where I grew up.)

Things were better back then Larry for one reason only and that is because life was simple . There were not computers or high tech gadgets, normal people never had houses filled with expensive modern day trappings so there was no need to lock your back door. The gap between the have and the have nots has widened making a massive market for thieves who have a ready market for these modern day goods. Back in the day all they would have found in some homes if they were lucky was a television or a radio, nowadays if a house is burgled they will fill a vehicle with tens of thousand £$ worth of goods.

The highest tech gadget I had when growing up was a bicycle which allowed me a since of freedom I never imagined for such a young age.

...and life was "simple" back then because most people adhered to the same moral principles and code of conduct; the Golden Rule if you will (for want of any better way to put it). E.g.: We were all taught "if it isn't yours, keep your hands off it."

Rather than list a whole host of "E.G.s", I'll simply say there was a whole different mindset employed by society as a whole back then (as opposed to the one 'in play' today). That's really what it all boils down to when all's said and done.

...and you could leave it outside the soda shop and fully expect to find it still sitting right where you left it when you went back outside, couldn't you.

Try doing that today with or without using 'security cables', or whatever.

That, in a nutshell, illustrates the difference between 'today' and 'yesterday'.

The Way We Were

I remain so thankful that during my younger years I was exposed to, and had an affinity towards such things as electric model trains and homemade soapbox racers; I cannot give it all justice with mere pictures and words.

The trains instilled in me a desire and purpose to learn basic carpentry as I built a train layout in the garage from plywood and 2 x 4s. Though the transformer controls and such were all DC, working with, and electrifying the tracks and semaphore and other electric train model accessories taught me about electricity, polarity, and short circuits, and getting shocked.

I wanted a drill press so bad then (but thankfully not a new iPhone, or $250 sneakers). My dad made arrangements for me to work at a hardware store for a couple of hours after school in 7th and 8th grades; Had to get the school to issue a work permit, and had to obtain an SS card too. I priced items on the shelves and eventually got my drill press and other tools. Once I was armed with those, I made a Go Cart, and leaned about gas engines, brakes, better steering than the rope and pulleys on the soapbox racer.

I did have the advantage, as most of my friends did back then, of having a stay at home mom. I bless and praise her each day for the work she expended in making sure me and my neighborhood friends had early swimming, horseback and roller skating lessons. Thankfully, we did not sit in Starbucks with our iPads and text our friends. We were poor financially, the other kid's parents paid their way and helped with taking or picking us up. Those lessons were prevalent and cheap back then. My mother also called me and friends in from the garage when Disneyland T.V. show was on.

These are just a fraction of the reasons why those times were so great, so enriching of practical knowledge, and so much better than texting, social media, and computer games.

Now returning you to the not so great reality we are forced to endure . . .

Robert

We now live in a country where spanking your children will land you in jail.
Where pride of country is frowned upon.
Where believing in God is ridiculed.
Where marking the graves of our fallen soldiers with crosses is be fought.
Where Christmas can't be celebrated on the town green.
Where children sue their parents.
Where teachers can't reprimand children.
Where we have police and metal detectors in schools.
Where grammar school kids are bringing pot to school.
Where college kids with useless degrees are rioting because they can't find a job.
And on and on...................................
