Racing the GT40 - why not?

Hello everybody!

Sorry I have not posted for so long. The birth of my baby daughter Kaitlyn (15 months ago already) has seriously cut into my free time and GT40 savings budget - Pumpkin Patch clothes are frightfully expensive!! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smirk.gif To Robert in Dromana and Chris in Melb a personal hello and sorry I haven't called.

I am writing though as I have a querry regarding why I do not see any GT40's racing? Whilst reviewing some of the recent postings regarding the S7 vs the GT40's (all manufacturers) it wasmentioned that the GT40 we all admire would trounce the average Ferbi or Lambo. Whilst doing some paper work I noticed Sam Newman (an Australian TV id) understeer a corner in the nations cup (I think thats the race?)and attempt to use his lambo as a mower on the grass. I am basically wondering why the GT40 is not used in these racers, or even the Targa Cup races eg Targa Tasmania. I admit my knowledge of the race laws is none existant, so could anybody in Oz enlighten me on this issue - and maybe we can even find a way to place a GT40 in these racers (I would love to beat Brock in his Moanro /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif.

Anyway thanks for all the great reads and thanks in advance for your answers.

PS - This does include racing in other parts of the world, but I would like to observe with out having to skip oceans.

Hi Charlie,

Good to see you have re-surfaced with your enthusiasm still in tact /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

With regards to racing, have a look at this thread…

RF40 race debut delayed

As far as competing in Nations Cup is concerned… I understand that there is still a little bit of politicing to get through before they’ll let a rocket-ship like an RF40 in the category. Its not in their interest to have a particular model disappearing into the distance, as happened with the highly modified Monaro in last year’s Bathurst 24Hr. The organisers are still taking flack over that decision. That Monaro has since had its wings severely clipped... but rest assured, there is more than one way to skin a GT40 /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Hello Chris,

hows life and just as important how is the car coming along?

Perfectly understandable that the organizers would be concerned about any indiscretion. The Monaro did well, but I must confess that I did not expect to do so well. Are the cars in the Nations Cup standard (but in a Clubsport config from factory) or have they in turn been embellished. I f embellieshed I would state that the RF you are building would have fair competition. Any way I though it would be nice to see a GT40 race. Take care and I'll continue to read from the background - atleast until I finally get my car (I see the car with my name on it every night /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif)

Charlie,

With regards to your question about whether the Nation's Cup cars are standard, the answer is no, but the modifications are considered by the rules to allow for close racing.

The Monaro however was permitted to be so highly modified (shared almost nothing with the donor clubsport) that one would have to ask whether it was the organiser's intention that it win the 24Hr race. It was, and still is a scandal in my opinion... but then agin, I am a one-eyed Ford supporter /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

As I understand a RF did compete in the touring class at Targa Tazmainia.
We have several sanctioning bodies here in the states that will allow the car to run in Super production or super unlimited classes.
The Grand America and the American Lemans series won't allow us to run for fear of upsetting Ford with the reliese of the new GT. There are trying to get some Ford factory backed efforts to compete in these series. They have ther fear of one of our replicas beats the factory effort that Ford would pull their backing from the series. Chickens.

Gordon,

Has anyone attempted to homologate a car with SCCA (or anyone else) for Super Production?

That's great. I understand that SP is very popular on the left coast, so you must have plenty of cars to race. Here in the east we dont see many SP entries, and when we do its usually one of those mini-stock car things and they get grouped with small bore & spec racer.
