RCR40 vs. SLC

I would not expect any great difference in finished cost between the GT-40 or the SL-C.
I do believe that the GT-40 build time may be slightly greater because of the different style of bodywork. This is merely an assumption on my part not having built a 40. I do know how long it would take to build the SL-C, having assembled mine twice already (final assembly to come shortly). First time is around 200-250 hours maximum, assuming no significant changes are made. Just ask Rob Mesa (and me).

John, you bring up a good point as I have been in Ford GT's and GT40's. The Ford GT is much more comfortable than a GT40. Have not had the opprotunity to be in an SLC. I have been told that the SLC is a more comfortable car to sit in and drive. I am 6'-2" with more leg than body. I discussed this with Fran and his opinion was the SLC would be a better fit for me.

If you are long in the legs, the SLC is probably the best fit for you of any kit car I know of. With the masters mounted outside, the pedals can be pushed forward so far that only NBA players could reach them, assuming you have the seats mounted all the way back as virtually everyone does...

RCR had a demo car setup this way, and though I am 6', I could barely reach the pedals enough to move the car around, much less actually drive it.

I sat in a GT40 a couple of times, and each time was reminded just how small a car it really is. Tall people can be made to fit in them to be sure (look at Dennis Olthoff) but the SLC is considerably bigger in the interior.

Just a data point.

You should sit in the cars, drive them both if possible, and then make up your mind! :)

Interesting question. I have both. Older GTD GT40 licensed for the street in Calif and tracked quite a bit. The SLC is under construction but will be a track only car.

Cost: both cars can be done for 75K more or less. This assumes you do all labor. What you put into the car as far as parts will determine the final cost.

Gearbox. This is the most important thing to get right, I would expect to spend at least 10K for the gearbox. I have 14K into my Porsche g50 including everything between the engine and driveshaft's including starter. Motors can be made stronger gearbox's cannot. You are going to live with whatever type you start with.

Spend 66% of your power train budget on the gearbox/clutch/etc.

MUST!!!!!!!!!!!! have limited slip. I like TBD Quaife's, I have them in both, fucking magic!

Power, believe it or not 400-450HP is plenty, strong 331 in the GT40 or LS3 in the SLC will do it just fine.

Brakes. More brakes is better, period. This will necessitate 17 inch wheels on the GT40, sorry, but there's no 15 inch tires anymore anyway. The new standard SLC brakes look good but if I had to do it again I would have upgraded to two piece rotors and better calipers that would accommodate 14" fronts and 13" rears.

I am short so I like both. If you are 6 foot and have a passenger in mind then you and she will be happier in the SLC. However, if you ALWAYS WANTED A GT40 then nothing else will do and you will love that little terror.

Paint, you can save money here. A low cost Miracle paintjob is about $1500. If you prep it and ask around the hot rod guys, you will find out that a lot of then are doing this for street driven rods. Track work will really age paint quickly. Better 1500 with chips that $10000 worth of them.

Pick one and do it............then do the other!!!!!!!!!!
