And your feet are forward of the front suspension, thus limiting the width. Of course, if you built a GT40 with a four cylinder transverse powertrain, you could move the seats back, but then you would have your head under the rear glass!

The GT40 is mid engined, a Porsche 911 is rear engined.
The 40 was designed as a race car so internal space was way down a list of design priorities (see Gurney bubble;) )
