Steering rack options

Just thought I'd throw this out there as to what people have used, hyd racks or electric racks or electric assist columns, i'm basically at that stage with the chassis where i have to make allowance for a rack and column, and thought i'd get some idea as to a direction before i go buying anything.

cheers John

At this state in your design, you should select a steering gear that is the correct length to give minimum bump steer. Considering that running hoses and adding a pump can be a big deal, an in-line electric booster (discussed on this board) is probably the simplest path.

A possible ???? candidate in Australia is the Ford Territory AWD rack.

It is however a power steering rack. Unlike the 2WD Territory it is in front of the wheels as per GT40

You will need to check length.

Thanks for that Kevin, come to think of it i think from memory Chris has used a territory rack in his build.

What has always shitted me off with the steering rack issue is length and mounting.
You get one or the other not often both.

What I came up with it Honda civic power racks hyd or elec.
These are a rear steer, where the inner tie rods mount to remove that and mount a bar that is the correct length to give no bump steer, mount your rack end /rose joints to the end of the bar.
You have an adjustment by longer or shorter bar.

I have designed this into my next project and on susprog it has no bumpsteer.

Daiwoo use a similar rack hyd.

They are rear steer as well.

Got it sorted, i managed to get the rack length of the 4WD Territory rack, clamped on some suspension brackets in the right spot, ran a straight edge from top to bottom through hole centers and i'm a couple of mm out, dont think its worth worrying about, its that close to spot on.

Jim, the Holden Camira used a similar rack as well, though Im not sure that they were available in power steer form... should be lots of those lying around Australia, they have tie rods behind axle, but as you mention the addition of a mount bar solves that for front steer, would allow the rack to raised for more tootsie clearance as well.

You cant find a Camira here anymore Jack.
The wrecking yards dont even want them.

They did have power steer because I owned one.
