tyre size

I am in the process of changing the goodrich T/A radials on my CAV (51) to Avons CR6ZZ. Can I put a 245/60 tyre at the front without any clearance issues ( Currently the fronts are 235/60)

Hi Syed,

How's it going my friend? About the fronts, you'd do better with Avon 215/50/15. To make the 245s work your problem won't be with the fenders or suspension clearance, it will be ride height. To get the ride height down the front upper control arms will be approaching the limit of travel in the upper balljoint of the stock old style CAV uprights on your car, even at static ride settings.

So in bump (as in normal road irregularities) you will bind the upper balljoint and this can lead to the failure of the upper balljoint mounting block bolts. See this thread: http://www.gt40s.com/forum/cav-gt40-talk/21857-more-new-upgrades.html

Autofutura has addressed this issue in thier new uprights by inclining the upper ball joint mount to give back the angle lost to the upper control arm. However these uprights are not backwards compatible with the "100 Series" cars like yours produced by or from parts from the old Cape Advanced Vehicles (CAV).

To get the most out of those Avons you should seriously consider CAV Canada's new Steel Front Uprights. These are easily fitted and work with your existing brake discs, hubs, rotors and suspension. Add the new Steel Rear Uprights and the car will really feel planted, predictable and better braking too.

How's the tread life on the Avons? A softer tyre will wear faster and is more sensitive to camber changes, another good reason to look at our uprights, a signifigant reduction in camber rates front and rear, bumpsteer also goes away. It all adds up to a much better handling car.

Sorry about being long winded, but there's more to it than just tyre size or compound, hopefully the information is helpful.

Cheers

Hi Syed,
I just received a set of Kumho ecsta 255/60/15 102V and 215/60/15 94V for less than the price of 1 Avon rear. Why they are priced so low I don't know because they have a good reputation and quality. Other members have used them too. Dont know what your tyre sizes are, but if you wanted to check them out. 255/60/15 are £66.70 each inc VAT and delivery, through mytyres.co.uk , and they arrived within 2 days.

I have no connection with the supplier, just delighted with the deal.

regards
Dave

Thanks for the info guys. I have put on Avon 275/50 and 225/65 at the rear and front respectively.I am attending a track day at Silverstone on the 18th of this month and will let you know how the tyres perform. I do have a set of 295/50 and 226/60 kumho ecsta tyres and although the speed rating is higher than the BF Goodrich radials, they may not ber ideal for track use as they are really for SUV,s
